Pequot Library is entering a bold and transformative new chapter. As the institution approaches America’s 250th anniversary, the library is expanding its role as a cultural, educational, and civic gathering place, activating its nationally significant Special Collections through dynamic exhibitions, public programming, education initiatives, and strategic partnerships. We are seeking an entrepreneurial, ambitious, and visionary Chief Advancement Officer to help shape this next era of growth.

This is not a traditional fundraising role. It is a rare opportunity to build, lead, and help define the future of one of New England’s most distinctive cultural institutions. Working closely with the Executive Director and an engaged Board of Trustees, the Chief Advancement Officer will serve as a key strategic partner in designing and driving a modern advancement operation that supports exhibitions, education and outreach, Special Collections, public programs, major events, and long-term institutional growth.

The Opportunity

This is a defining opportunity for a leader excited by the prospect of building something meaningful and lasting. The successful candidate will play a central role in shaping the library’s future fundraising strategy and external engagement, including:

• Major gifts and donor cultivation
• Institutional and foundation support
• Corporate sponsorship and partnerships
• Annual and leadership giving
• Strategic campaigns and long-term growth initiatives
• Advancement infrastructure and systems development

The Chief Advancement Officer Will:

• Build and lead a dynamic, modern advancement office
• Partner closely with the Executive Director and Board of Trustees to advance institutional priorities
• Expand individual giving, foundation support, and corporate partnerships
• Develop and execute strategies for major gifts, annual giving, grants, sponsorships, and campaigns
• Help position Pequot Library for long-term sustainability and transformational growth
• Serve as a visible ambassador for the library within the community and beyond

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Advancement Leadership

• Design and execute a comprehensive advancement strategy aligned with organizational priorities and growth goals
• Partner with executive leadership and the Board on cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation strategies
• Identify opportunities for transformational partnerships and institutional visibility
• Support long-range planning and future campaign development

Revenue Growth & Philanthropic Engagement

• Build and manage a portfolio of major donors, foundations, and corporate partners
• Expand annual giving and leadership giving initiatives
• Drive sponsorship and underwriting strategies across exhibitions, performances, programs, and events
• Cultivate high-level donor relationships and stewardship opportunities

Grants & Institutional Partnerships

• Identify and secure support from foundations and institutional funders
• Strengthen grant strategy, pipeline development, and proposal systems
• Build relationships with regional and national funding partners

Events, Visibility & Community Engagement

• Oversee and elevate a portfolio of high-profile fundraising and cultivation events
• Collaborate on donor-facing experiences tied to exhibitions, programs, and special initiatives
• Support institutional positioning around America 250 and future signature initiatives

Advancement Operations & Team Leadership

• Oversee advancement systems, reporting, donor stewardship, and prospect management
• Build and strengthen operational infrastructure to support long-term growth
• Supervise and mentor advancement staff and consultants as appropriate

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will bring:

• Proven experience in nonprofit advancement, fundraising, philanthropy, or external relations
• Demonstrated success securing major gifts, foundation grants, and sponsorships
• Strong relationship-building and communication skills
• Strategic and entrepreneurial thinking
• A collaborative leadership style and comfort working with boards and senior stakeholders
• Passion for arts, culture, education, history, or civic institutions
• Experience within cultural organizations, museums, universities, performing arts organizations, or mission-driven nonprofits is highly valued.

Compensation

Base Salary: $105,000

In addition, the position includes an incentive-based compensation structure aligned with fundraising performance and broader institutional advancement goals. Pequot Library offers a competitive benefits package and an opportunity to play a leadership role in shaping the future of a nationally significant cultural institution.
