DIRECTOR

The Newark Museum seeks a dynamic, imaginative, and accomplished leader to serve as its next Director. This is an opportunity to lead a major museum (the largest in the state) with a broad scope and a powerful connection to its surroundings. Founded in 1909 by John Cotton Dana, the Museum boasts collections in African art, American art, Asian art, decorative arts, and folk art and textiles that are among the greatest in the United States; its collection of Tibetan art is unrivalled. The Museum also houses the only significant collection of flora and fauna, gems, and other scientific objects in New Jersey, and its holdings include gardens and a historic house.

From its founding, the Newark Museum has been driven by a deep commitment to the citizens of Newark: its mission is to provide relevant, accessible, and educational experiences that support and promote the civic health of the city. The Museum benefits from—and seeks to serve—the culturally diverse communities of the Newark region; through nationally recognized programs, it communicates and mirrors the area’s history, strength, and aspirations. The Museum today is part of a major downtown transformation. Nearby institutions include Essex County College, New Jersey Institute of Technology, New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), the Newark Public Library, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, and Rutgers University-Newark. A burgeoning visual arts community, as well as a surge in commercial and housing development, investment, and technology, also contribute to the dynamism of the area. Corporate headquarters in downtown Newark include Audible.com, Mars, PSEG, Panasonic North America, and Prudential Financial.

The Director will build on the strong legacy of the Museum and continue its record of innovation, excellence, and impact. Working with the Board and staff, the Director will provide strategic vision, direction, and executive and administrative leadership for an organization that serves its community—and has national and international influence—through its collections and programs. The Museum seeks an experienced leader with the intellect and imagination to match and fuel its ambitions; an energetic and compelling public advocate; a knowledgeable and sophisticated thought leader; an astute manager of financial and human resources; and an inclusive and accessible partner to the staff and larger community. This individual must also have a commitment to diversity and the ability to develop sources of financial support for the Museum’s strategic requirements.
