The Harvard Art Museums have a comprehensive collection of Chinese art. The museums’ holdings of early Chinese jades, ceramics, and bronzes are outstanding in both quality and depth. Other collection strengths include Buddhist sculptures, tomb sculptures, later ceramics and jades, rhinoceros horn carvings, and contemporary ink painting.

Duties & Responsibilities:
The Harvard Art Museums seek a rising leader in the field of Chinese art. Responsible for the care, documentation, research, and presentation of the museums’ extraordinary collection of Chinese art, the Alan J. Dworsky Associate Curator is expected to emerge as an intellectual authority on Chinese art through innovative exhibitions and publications. The associate curator will work closely with colleagues and supporters to further strengthen and expand the collection, and collaborate with colleagues in the Division of Modern and Contemporary art on the acquisition and presentation of contemporary Chinese art. The associate curator will also be responsible for the care and presentation of the museums’ collections of Korean paintings and decorative art and South and Southeast Asian Buddhist art.

In addition to crafting an ambitious exhibition, research, and publication program for Chinese art, the associate curator works closely with students and faculty to foster a significant and sustained curricular use of the collection for both undergraduate and graduate teaching. The associate curator works within a team environment and promotes dialogue, engagement, and collaboration with colleagues within the Division of Asian and Mediterranean Art; with other curatorial divisions that have overlapping collection holdings and expertise; and with the Museums’ conservation colleagues. The associate curator acts as a mentor to curatorial fellows, interns, and students of the university, and may supervise their work. The associate curator works closely with collectors and museum supporters, and actively solicits gifts for the collection and funds for museum purposes from individuals, foundations, federal agencies, and other sources.

This is a 5 year term position with the possibility of extension and promotion.

Basic Qualifications:

Candidates MUST meet the following requirements:
Ph.D. in art history, archaeology, East Asian Studies, or related field; fluency in Chinese and English; minimum of three years curatorial, teaching or field-related experience.

Additional Qualifications:

Scholarly promise and achievement in the field of Chinese art, and a commitment to working and playing an active role in a university setting. Knowledge of and interest in Korean art a plus.
