Education and Engagement Fellow

Position Description

The New Museum seeks to fill a temporary position to replace the Marcia Tucker Fellow, who will be on maternity leave, for a three-month, full-time, limited-term position in early 2020. This Temporary Fellow position provides programmatic support and develops discursive content between the New Museum’s education and curatorial departments. The Fellow reports to the Director of Education and Public Engagement. The Fellow will gain invaluable experience in the theory and practice of education, public engagement, administration, and other museum functions and play a critical role in producing public programs.

The Fellow will be responsible for scholarly research as it intersects with the Museum’s upcoming exhibitions, public programs, and digital archive. This work will enrich both the public’s experience of our exhibitions and the education department’s engagement initiatives. The Fellow will work closely with both education and curatorial staff to conceive and execute public programming for exhibition-related and other public programming. This position is a full-time, limited-term post begins January 2020 and ends in April 2020.

 

Duties:

1. Organize public programs, such as lectures and dialogues, convenings and symposia, workshops, gallery programs, experimental projects, and participatory experiences on themes related to upcoming exhibitions and EPE department initiatives.

2. Participate in writing and editing online and printed materials for public programs.

3. Conduct extensive research on the context of upcoming New Museum exhibitions; outcomes of research include public programs, bibliographies, and other materials.


Qualifications:

 Pre- or post-doctoral candidates; or graduate degree in art history or curatorial studies. Field of expertise within contemporary art preferred.

 Deep knowledge of contemporary art and artists. 

 Skilled writer and editor.

 Excellent organizational skills.

 Previous experience working in a museum and/or contemporary research setting desirable.

 Previous experience designing and implementing public programs desirable.

 Interest in education and public engagement a must.
