Director of Development

Job Summary

Directs all BAMPFA fundraising and membership efforts. Responsible for ensuring that the development department is successful in raising annual goals of approximately $6 million. Plays a key strategy, cultivation, and solicitation role in gifts and grants above $100,000, and is personally responsible for stewarding a portfolio of 50+ major donors, including trustees, with a goal of $1.5-$2 million annually. Directs the creation and achievement of short and long-term development plans and goals, identification of prospects, research, cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the BAMPFA fundraising program, comprised of the full range of development programs and functions, membership, events, donor stewardship, and other development-related activities. Conceives, creates, develops, establishes goals, and manages fundraising programs and strategies to meet goals and objectives. Ensures that department fundraising goals are achieved. Is deeply involved with the execution of department fundraising efforts to ensure that donor cultivation and solicitations are effective and strategic. Oversees identification, cultivation and solicitation of donors and donor prospects. Develops fundraising materials, builds development communication efforts, and works closely with BAMPFA communications, marketing, program, and administrative colleagues to ensure the alignment of approaches and efforts.
  • Manages a staff comprised of several professionals, managers, and related administrative support staff. Hires, trains, guides, and directs staff, and, as required, takes corrective action. Develops fundraising performance metrics and provides expert advice, mentoring, and ongoing feedback to staff members to ensure their successful completion of fundraising goals.
  • Creates and monitors development unit budget lines, ensuring effective use of resources in order to achieve department goals.
  • Leads the development of annual fundraising plans, plans for specific initiatives, and campaign plans, balancing competing interests and aligning resources with institutional priorities. Coordinates and Collaborates with other campus units on fundraising efforts.
  • Actively participates in long- and short-range institutional and strategic planning, chairing planning subcommittees as appropriate.
  • Serves as an expert lead development professional in major/principal gifts, responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gifts at the $100,000 level and higher. Develops individualized plans and/or strategies for cultivating and solicitation of major gifts. Presents formal fundraising proposals to major donors and prospects as appropriate. Supports and prepares BAMPFA Director and key volunteers for presenting proposals and solicitations. Serves as a persuasive advocate for the BAM/PFA.
  • Shares responsibility with the Director for strengthening the Board of Trustees, building close relationships between them and the organization, and developing their leadership and fundraising skills. Staffs and serves on Board Committees, playing a large role in setting agendas, identifying goals, and follow through. Responsible for personally soliciting gifts from board members to ensure they fulfill their pledges and annual giving commitments. Staffs board committees.

Required Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of fundraising and donor relations including advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of BAMPFA or the ability to learn quickly, its achievements, vision, and programs, as well as general knowledge of the UC Berkeley campus and higher education.
  • Knowledge of issues of concern for arts and educational institutions generally.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of leadership/management concepts and best practices.
  • Comprehensive leadership/management skills to select, train, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.
  • Comprehensive written, oral and interpersonal communications skills, including highly developed political acumen skills, to build and maintain effective working relationships with donors,  all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
  • Highly developed skills in meeting predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising goals.
  • Comprehensive strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical, problem-solving, persuasion/negotiation skills and marketing skills.
  • Highly developed knowledge of and good relations with regional and national arts supporters and donor community.

Education/Training

  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
