The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami seeks a dynamic, innovative Curator to lead all aspects of the Museum’s curatorial affairs. Reporting to the Executive Director, they will lead the exhibitions and curatorial department and serve as a member of the Museum’s senior leadership team. The Curator will strategize, articulate, and execute a comprehensive vision for MOCA’s curatorial objectives and support building a dynamic civic and cultural identity for the Museum.  This is a highly attractive opportunity for a flexible leader with a collaborative spirit to work in a rapidly transforming museum that aspires to become a leader in the growth of the city that surrounds it. 
 

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

• In partnership with the Executive Director, lead the exhibitions team in presenting a dynamic program of exhibitions and collection installations annually, supported by public programing, publications and digital resources.
• Manage the strategic direction of the exhibitions department, ensuring alignment with the institutional strategic plan.
• Collaborate with independent curators, supporting exhibition proposals and situating them within the overall arc and conception of the exhibitions cycle.
• With department staff assistance, oversee all aspects of exhibition production (budgets, schedules, and other logistical matters) for originally conceived shows and those travelling from other institutions.
• Provide collection-plan strategies, evaluating and proposing acquisitions and gifts, and provide guidance to the Board of Trustees’ Collections Committee.
• In collaboration with the Director of Development, play a key role in donor cultivation to secure works of art and funding for the exhibitions, publications and other programs.
• Plan, develop and manage departmental, exhibition, collection, and project budgets.
• Conduct research and write exhibition labels, didactics, and catalogue essays.
• Provide content for Museum communications as needed.
• Work in collaboration with the Curator of Education to provide interpretive content for school groups, public tours, and gallery guides.
• Supervise the Exhibitions and Project Manager, Registrar, and Chief Preparator in their work to implement best available standards of care and protection for both collections and loans.

• Knowledge of research tools and methodology.

• Demonstrated experience creating and managing departmental, project and/or program budgets.
• Excellent written, verbal, and aural communication skills.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
• Ability to interpret artwork and to communicate knowledge about it in a manner relevant and accessible to the general public.
• Ability to perform and oversee scholarly research in the field.
• Demonstrated ability to work closely with artists to realize exhibitions and project.
• Superior public speaking skills, specifically when interacting with donors, visitors, and community stakeholders.
   

REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS

• Master's degree in art history or related field, Ph.D. preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years curatorial experience.
• Minimum of 3 years management experience, preferably in a museum setting.
• Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with EmBARK or other collections management software.
• Demonstrated project management skills, including the creation and implementation of project outcomes and schedules.
• Ability to create and successfully manage an annual budget.
   

HIGHLY DESIRED

• Ph.D. in art history or related field.
• Bilingual in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole.

This is a full-time, salaried position requiring some early morning, late evening and weekend hours as necessary. A level 2 background check will be required upon the offer of employment.
