Deputy Director

Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Chief Creative Officer, The Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs is responsible for ensuring that the creative direction initiated by the Chief Creative Officer is implemented in all aspects of programming. This is a key leadership position that will collaborate with the Chief Creative Officer and Executive Creative Director to create diverse exhibition programs, foster relationships with a wide range of creatives, and develop forward-looking strategies for engaging a broad audience.

WHO YOU ARE
You have exceptional relationship management and contract negotiation skills and a proven track record of exhibition planning from program planning and budgeting to artist contract negotiations. You are a natural at curatorial text compilation and drafting for various department use + facilitating meaningful educational programs.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Administration

  • Responsible for the administration, coordination, and successful implementation of all operational aspects of curatorial affairs.
  • Develop and monitor departmental and exhibition budgets, contracts, agreements, NDA, and other administrative documents.
  • Oversea the exhibit collection and archive, including any loaning of the existing programming.

Exhibition Planning

  • Drive executive group discussions and decision-making around exhibition selection, scheduling, budgets, and marketing while being cognizant of best practices and audience engagement trends.
  • Focus on delivering an engaging series of exhibitions that drive attendance in a financially responsible way across ARTECHOUSE locations.
  • Conceive and shape a distinctive and dynamic exhibition program that advances ARTECHOUSE’s visibility and reputation, and includes exhibitions that travel nationally and internationally to ensure the CCO’s strategic vision is realized.
  • Develop exhibition and publication materials that convey sophisticated ideas while also appealing to a broad range of visitors and readers; assisting the curatorial team in strengthening writing.
  • Research projects and related educational programs.
  • Support any fundraising and promotion, which may include the writing and reviewing of grant proposals, journal articles, and publicity materials, as well as attendance at meetings, conventions, and civic events.
  • Work closely with the Digital Team to develop and implement strategies for the exhibitions, on digital platforms.

Artist Relationships

  • Plan and execute on a new artist acquisition strategy.
  • Nurture professional relationships and constantly be on the lookout for new opportunities.
  • Deepen the relationships with our diverse artist roster, as well as developing new relationships with emerging artists across all genres.
  • Plan and execute short-term and long-term artist retention and acquisition strategy.
  • Superintend legal contracts for exhibitions, artist commissions and residencies.
  • Build and maintain a network of professional relationships with artists, curators, critics, and other specialists locally, nationally, and globally.

Project Management

  • Build a detailed exhibition project schedule for each approved exhibition, and oversee project alignment with the master schedule.
  • Manage all contract negotiations with artists for commissioned and loaned work, and develops and negotiates contracts for traveling exhibitions. Additional contract work may include letters of agreement with other installation artists and creatives as needed or in situations where a standard loan agreement will not suffice.
  • Work closely with artists to become the bridge to rest of the departments
  • Develop/maintain rapport with counterparts at peer institutions worldwide, keeping an ear to the content needs.
  • Work with marketing and PR teams on ensuring that curatorial vision is properly translated in all public materials.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS + EXPERIENCE

  • BA and MA degree or the equivalent in education
  • 8+ years experience in relevant field in a leadership level
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and long-term while successfully attending to more immediate goals and tasks; natural critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including strong relationship skills and ability to work with people across a wide range of levels of power and influence
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize information and tailor key points to a variety of constituencies, including ability to prepare succinct and clear financial reports
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to consistently meet deadlines and follow-through on assignments, and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle confidential information tactfully and exercise discretion
