Director of Community Engagement

The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA), located in Little Rock, AR, seeks a Director of Community Engagement to advance the institution during an extraordinary transformation that includes the construction of a new state-of-the-art building, scheduled to open in 2022. Designed by the renowned architecture firm, Studio Gang, the new facility will secure the AMFA’s position as one of the top cultural institutions in the state and region. The new AMFA will feature state-of-the-art galleries, art school, theater, lecture hall, outdoor event area, and other spaces to host programming, classes, and performances. The innovative Cultural Living Room, restaurant, store, and landscaped grounds will position the AMFA as a cultural hub for Little Rock and the region.

The Director of Community Engagement is responsible for overseeing a robust calendar of programs, initiatives, and events that educate and engage the public, including adults, children, families, students and. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position is a leadership role and works collaboratively with the directors of the Windgate Art School, Children’s Theater and Performing Arts, Curatorial, Marketing, and Development Departments.  

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
• Creates and directs the vision and strategic plan for the department, ensuring all offerings are guest-centered, innovative, and reflect best practice; 
• Ensures all programming furthers the Museum and seeks to expand, diversify, and deepen audience engagement for all audiences from children to adult seniors;  
• Oversees the Museum’s statewide outreach activities, balancing onsite and offsite activities;
• Supervises and supports the department’s full and part-time staff and volunteer docents to promote the highest quality guest experience and collaborative and efficient internal operations;
• Represents AMFA to the community and develops strategic partnerships that advance and strengthen the cultural landscape of Central Arkansas and the state;
• Works collaboratively with the Curatorial Department to develop gallery interpretive materials and oversees the exhibitions in the Windgate Art School Gallery; 
• Prepares and oversees the department’s budget and works with the CFO to analyze and evaluate revenue and expenses;
• Collaborates with the Development Department to ensure programs and initiatives meet funder expectations and to create special opportunities to engage members;
• Other duties as assigned.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:
• Master’s degree (M.A.) or equivalent in art education, museum studies, art history, education, or a related field.
• 5 or more years’ experience designing and managing programs for a diverse audience.
• Strong knowledge of art history and current educational theories.
• Commitment to collaborating with community partners.
• Excellent verbal and communication skills and ease in connecting with visitors.
• Outgoing, creative, organized, with exceptional interpersonal skills.
