Registrar for Exhibitions, Registration Department (Full time, Exempt position)

The Job
The Registrar for Exhibitions assists the Head of Registration with the administration of exhibitions within the department.  Manages the Assistant Registrar for Extended Loans and Exhibitions. Coordinates major exhibitions and oversees minor exhibitions and gallery rotations; effects the movement of works of art within and outside the museum; issues and obtains legal documentation; maintains records on works of art both on loan to the museum and from the permanent collection.  Collaborates with the Head of Registration regarding the development and implementation of related policies, systems, and procedures.

In this role, you will…

Coordinate major in-house and Mia-generated traveling exhibitions, including:

  • Performing condition checks
  • Organizing and maintaining checklists and files
  • Issuing legal documents and loan agreements, loan receipts and certificates of insurance
  • Organizing packing, shipping, courier, customs and insurance arrangements
  • Writing insurance indemnifications
  • Reviewing exhibition contracts
  • Assisting with budget preparation

Manage the Assistant/Associate Registrar for Extended Loan and Exhibitions.

Enter loan data into the collections database to generate documents.

Maintain the permanent files by updating records with exhibition information.

Recommend and draft policies and procedures.

You have managed people before and are able to motivate them to do their best work. You are able to work alone and be self-directed but also can work as a team.

Specific Requirements

  • BA in Art History, Studio Arts, Museum Studies or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Seven or more years of experience in an art museum or similar institution in the Registration department.
  • Highly organized with exceptional computer skills.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Exceptional communication/interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Satisfactory criminal background check required.
