Propositions for the Future of the Art Museum

June 6, 2013

With the massive social, demographic, technological and economic shifts that have been radically transforming global society in recent decades, art museums around the world have been managing in environments of significant change. In March 2013, an international group of museum directors collaborated with the Aspen Institute to create a forum to reach the next level of questioning and provocation regarding the future of art museums. Several participating museum directors, led by Olga Viso of the Walker Art Center, presented their experiences to AAMD at the Annual Meeting in Montreal. The Art Museum Today, in Discussion, a white paper authored by LACMA director Michael Govan on behalf of the Aspen group, reflects a strong embrace of the diversity of museums, the challenges they face, and propositions for their respective futures.
