Statement on Detroit Institute of Arts Regional Millage

New York, NY
August 9, 2012

The Association of Art Museum Directors congratulates the Detroit Institute of Arts on the recent passage of a regional millage, which will ensure the future financial stability of one of the country's greatest museums. Thanks to the outpouring of support from the people of Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties, as well as the many volunteers who spread the word about this important vote, the DIA will continue to be an extraordinary resource for the people of Detroit and the nation, and will be able to offer free admission to area residents. AAMD would also like to recognize the hard work, dedication, and passion of Graham Beal, director of the Detroit Institute of Arts. An outstanding leader, Graham has guided the DIA during a time of tremendous economic challenges, and has not only met those challenges but has developed innovative arts programming that is a model for how museums can engage and collaborate with their communities. The results of this vote demonstrate the public support for the DIA and are a tangible endorsement of the importance of art museums to their communities.
