SMU’s Meadows Museum is seeking a Museum Curator to curate exhibitions of Spanish and other schools of art. This position will curate, research, document, and occasionally produce published text on SMU’s art collections, giving priority to the Algur H. Meadows and the Elizabeth Meadows collections, while also overseeing the University Art Collection. This position will seek and research potential acquisitions and develop exhibitions. The Curator should be an ambassador and advocate of the museum and cultivate patrons and supporters of the institution. Serves as Collections coordinator and liaison to the Meadows Museum Advisory Council.

Essential Functions:
Curate Exhibitions and oversee their implementation. Write didactics, design and oversee installations. Write for catalogues, such as catalogue entries and/or essays, contributing articles to the museum magazine. May also involve coordinating with guest curators.
Research and publication of permanent collection, researching works of art to produce gallery labels and update curatorial files. Manages extensive provenance research of entire permanent collection, and oversees provenance project with entire curatorial staff to result in entire collection's provenance being published on museum website and other publications.
Public presentation of collection and temporary exhibitions; includes training museum docents on new lectures and new acquisitions, giving tours at press previews, giving lectures associated with exhibitions or to present research on works of art in the collection, and participating in symposia organized by the Meadows as well as other art institutions and organizations.
Day to day administrative duties of the curatorial department, e.g., loan request letters, loan agreements, grant applications, contracts, financials, budgets, scheduling, and filing as well as managing curatorial staff.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in art history is required; Spanish art is preferred.

Doctoral degree is preferred.

A minimum of five years of experience working in a museum’s curatorial department is required.

Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish is required.

Fluency in (reading or speaking) German, Italian, and French is desirable.

Must have handled high priority projects with keen attention to detail, schedules, and budgets.

Experience conducting effective public presentations, lectures, tours, and participating in symposia, is required.

Must have work experience performing excellent research, editing, proofreading, and utilizing analytical skills.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and utilization of database software.

Must have a minimum of two years of supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively interact with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Written skills include writing for catalogues, essays, and magazine articles.

Candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships with internal groups as well as external local, national and international communities. Must be effective as a Museum ambassador, and cultivate patrons and supporters of the institution.

Candidate must demonstrate excellent problem solving skills, as problems can be highly varied and complex, requiring novel and creative approaches for resolution.

Candidate must have excellent organizational and project management skills.

Must be attentive to details, including loan request letters, agreements, grant applications, budgets, scheduling and analysis.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and in database software.

This position requires occasional work in the evening and on some weekends when required by exhibition or project.

This position requires occasional travel for couriering works of art, for research for exhibitions or for the permanent collection, and for attending seminars and symposia related to research and/or professional advancement.

Physical/Environmental Demands:
This position must be able to reach above shoulders, carry/lift 25 lbs., sit for long periods of time, crawl, handle objects (dexterity), and stand.
