Association of Art Museum Directors Will Meet in San Antonio, Texas

The Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) will hold its Mid-Winter meeting in San Antonio, Texas, from January 28-30, 2018. In addition to the Association’s regular Committee meetings, and visits to Artpace, the McNay Art Museum, and the San Antonio Museum of Art, members will attend or participate in a series of panel and group discussions with featured speakers including:

  • Julián Castro, former Secretary of the Department of Housing & Urban Development, and former Mayor of San Antonio, in a conversation with Katie Luber, Director, San Antonio Museum of Art, discussing the obligations and opportunities for art museums to participate in community development;

  • Linda Johnson, President and CEO of the Brooklyn Public Library, addressing changes in libraries in the digital age—and what art museums can learn from this—in a public conversation with Anne Pasternak, Director, Brooklyn Museum;

  • Jon Peede, Senior Deputy Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, will address the group at a lunch presentation;

  • And Arthur Cohen, CEO and Co-Founder of LaPlaca Cohen, presenting the latest trend data on museum engagement from his firm’s regular Culture Track report.

Additionally, AAMD will continue its commitment to providing professional development opportunities, offering members opportunities to hear about and learn from leaders in the field of management and planning. William Cary, Senior Director of Annual and Corporate Giving at the Barnes Foundation, will speak about new approaches to membership development and audience engagement. Martin Gammon, Founder of the Pergamon Art Group, will discuss the evolution of the art museum collection in the 21st century. The author of Tribal Leadership: Leveraging Natural Groups to Build a Thriving Organization, Dave Logan, will speak about management strategies and best practices. And William F. Meehan III, the Lafayette Partners Lecturer in Strategic Management at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, will address the group on the importance strategic leadership for ensuring impact in the nonprofit sector.

The Association was invited to hold its meeting in San Antonio by directors Rich Aste, Director, McNay Art Museum, and Katie Luber, Director, San Antonio Museum of Art. This will be the first AAMD meeting held under the presidency of Lori Fogarty, Director and CEO of the Oakland Museum of California.

The 2018 Mid-Winter Meeting will have an active social media presence, with attendees encouraged to live-Tweet and Instagram their experiences with the hashtag #AAMDSanAntonio.
