Out to Art at the Yale Center for British Art

March 13, 2014

Since 2009, the Yale Center for British Art Education staff has developed art museum educational programming with “Residential Education at Chapel Haven (REACH),” New Haven, CT. Chapel Haven provides lifelong, individualized support services for adults with developmental and social disabilities, enabling them to live independent and productive lives. “Out to Art” provides REACH students, ages 18 and older, with a wide range of museum activities and experiential learning opportunities.  At one particularly exciting session, the YCBA’s installation team introduced students to the process of receiving, un-crating, moving, and installing an artwork. Students were involved in each step, from the loading dock delivery to deciding where to place the label on the pedestal. Chapel Haven students attend weekly sessions that use art appreciation and art-making to enhance life skills and social engagement.
