Art Museum Day 2015
For the sixth year, AAMD is uniting its membership to celebrate Art Museum Day. Held in concert with ICOM’s International Museum Day, this year AAMD’s Art Museum Day will take place on and around Monday, May 18.
In 2014, approximately 180 member museums offered free admission, special programs and events in an international celebration of the importance of museums in our world.
Many AAMD members will offer free or reduced admission, educational programs, and/or discounts on or around May 18. AAMD also encourages museum visitors to use social media to share their Art Museum Day experiences with their museum and with their social networks.

Following is a list of AAMD member museums participating in Art Museum Day 2015. Note that while ICOM’s International Museum Day is formally held each year on May 18, some institutions shift their celebrations to adjacent dates.

Asian Heritage Street Celebration at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, during Art Museum Day 2014. This year's festivities coincide on Saturday, May 16 again with the Asian Heritage Street Celebration, a public festival honoring the Asian community held on Civic Center Plaza adjacent to the museum. In collaboration with the Street Celebration, the museum will host music and dance from Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam performed by the Southeast Asian Arts & Culture Coalition. In this program for adults, specially trained docents present the Museum’s collection by means of verbal descriptions, three-dimensional tactile models based on original works of art, and sculpture. The experience may be enhanced by related music and/or art-making to provide multi-sensory access to the visual arts.
Artists with Disabilities: Dale Chihuly, Claude Monet, and Josiah Wedgwood all had different, potentially career-ending disabilities. Yet, they all found ways to overcome their disabilities and become masters of their art form.

On Saturday, May 23, JCSM opens exhibitions featuring two very different but equally treasured personal collections. We look forward to “The Greatest Poem— American Art in the Robert B. Ekelund, Jr. and Mark Thornton Collection," which features a selection of paintings, prints, and drawings by such important American artists as Winslow Homer, George Bellows, and Arthur Dove. We also are excited to present "Between the Black and Caspian Seas: Antique Rugs from the Caucasus, Selections from the Collection of Larry Gerber." This exhibition will introduce our audiences to the handmade weavings of this region of western Asia.

This will include special art making activities in the studios in connection with the exhibition "History Refused to Die: Alabama's African-American Self-Taught Artists in Context. Explore the Asian Art Museum's exhibitions and galleries for FREE on Saturday, May 16 in commemoration of International Museum Day and Art Museum Day. This year's festivities coincide with the Asian Heritage Street Celebration, a public festival honoring the Asian community held on Civic Center Plaza adjacent to the museum. This museum exhibition is the first to explore both the historical roots and the contemporary impact of this art making technique. Wednesday, May 20, 12:30pm: Take a tour of "The Critique of Reason: Romantic Art, 1760–1860," an exhibition co-organized with the Yale University Art Gallery. Two of the exhibition curators, A. Cassandra Albinson, Curator of Paintings and Sculpture and Izabel Gass, Graduate Research Assistant, will examine the role gender plays in constructing the “Romantic artist.” They will ask: What are the characteristics of the archetypal Romantic artist? Are these characteristics implicitly coded as male? Have there been, or could there be, female Romantic artists? Freer and Sackler Galleries*
The Smithsonian Institution has two museums of Asian art: the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. The Freer Gallery houses one of the premier collections of Asian art, with objects dating from Neolithic times to the early 20th century, as well as the world's most important collection of works by James McNeill Whistler. The Sackler Gallery features both permanent and temporary exhibitions of Asian art from ancient times to the present.
On view May 16, 2015 through January 2, 2017: Peacock Room REMIX centers on Filthy Lucre, an immersive interior by painter Darren Waterston. He reinterprets James McNeill Whistler’s famed Peacock Room as a resplendent ruin, an aesthetic space that is literally overburdened by its own excesses—of materials, history, and creativity. Like Filthy Lucre and the original Peacock Room, this exhibition invites viewers to consider the complex relationships among art, money, and the passage of time.

Jewelry & Costumes: A Yemeni Story

Jewelry has long played an important role in Yemeni society, especially because of its key role in the marriage contract. Join Marjorie Ransom, two-time U.S. diplomat to Yemen, as she chronicles the important period of Yemeni jewelry production from 1900 to 1970, through slides and physical examples of these objects. Ms. Ransom will embellish her talk with anecdotes about her recent meetings in Israel with Yemenites who formed the majority of the silversmiths in Yemen during the period of her study. The lecture is followed by an author book-signing for Ms. Ransom’s Silver Treasures from the Land of Sheba: Yemeni Regional Jewelry, which is available for purchase in the Museum Store. Arte en Construcción Special Presentation Entremanos Dance: Casilda Madrazo Guitar: Gabriel Elizondo Violoncello: Irene Carrasco Palmas: Armando Tovar Entremanos is a choreographic piece based on flamenco dance movements and instrumental music in three movements created by Casilda Madrazo and Gabriel Elizondo, with the collaboration of Irene Carrasco in the cello and Armando Tovar in palms.
