Celebrate the 10th Annual Art Museum Day!

Join AAMD member museums across North America to participate in and celebrate the 10th Annual Art Museum Day on May 18, 2019.

We launched Art Museum Day ten years ago to underscore the ways in which art museums foster community, providing crucial opportunities for visitors of all ages to learn and be inspired by the limitlessness of what centuries of peoples and cultures have created. While many communities have celebrations that involve museum participation, Art Museum Day is an opportunity for our member institutions to coordinate and give back, providing everything from free admission to special programs.

AAMD’s Art Museum Day—organized in concert with ICOM’s International Museum Day—will take place on and around Saturday, May 18. In 2018, more than 150 museums participated.

Museums as re-activators of political memory

In the conceptual framework proposed by ICOM for the International Day of Museums:  Museums as cultural focus. The future of tradition, MUAC articulates its proposal from three actions related to the memory of the present in which a museum of contemporary art is located.

The first action is a performative tour with participants of the Children’s Contemporary Art Laboratory of the MUAC. This tour will be about how museums have been transforming from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century.

We will also have a tour mediated by curator Andrea Villers, who will develop a view of the exhibition Ai Weiwei. Resetting Memories; which questions the retrospective about the political dimension of contemporary as the future of the tradition.

Finally, we will have a special tour on Ai Weiwei. Resetting Memories led by Yolanda Gómez Barranco, Coordinator of the Arts and Crafts Center Escuelita Emiliano Zapata in Pedregal neighborhood of Santo Domingo. Yolanda will share with us a reflection on the construction of community memory and the use of traditional knowledge and tools in the creation of self-managed contemporary projects through an exercise in the halls of the museum.

All activities will be free.

Faces for Eternity: Romano-Egyptian Mummy Portraits at the ROM
Join us for the unveiling of ROM's newest acquisition – a spectacular Romano-Egyptian Mummy portrait of a woman with an intriguing history. Curator Paul Denis will place the ROM's mummy portraits in their historical context, then trace the portrait's long journey from the Fayum region of Egypt to Toronto, with a few extra stops along the way. Originally one of a pair brought to the ROM by Director Charles T. Currelly, this display marks the first time in over a century that the two pieces will be together again. Paul Denis unravels the twisted path that these two unique objects have taken; from discovery and purchase to being separated and finally reunited in time for International Museum Day.

In addition to the Penn Museum's Daily Dig (a 15-minute conversational "deep dive" into one of the Museum's objects in its collections), and its public tour, take a walk through history with a Global Guide tour: a tour of the Middle East Galleries with a person originally from Syria or Iraq. What better way to learn about the culture of another place than to speak to someone who grew up there? Through the Global Guides Program, the Museum offers gallery tours led by immigrants and refugees. Not only do they share historical information about the artifacts on display, the guides also combine personal experiences and stories to interpret objects from their countries of origin.

Power down, unplug, and join a voyage into the visionary art of Tibetan Buddhism. The journey from clamor to contemplation unfolds as you progress through a series of immersive spaces, engaging with spectacular art along the way. Nearly 100 objects, both historical and contemporary, are drawn largely from two of the country’s most extraordinary collections of Himalayan art: the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.

Visitors are given the opportunity not only to view spectacular Buddhist art from the 9th century to as recent as 2016, but also to take part in the narrative it presents of a quest for enlightenment. For participants and viewers alike, the exhibition offers a pause from the ordinary noise of daily living and a chance to contemplate and reflect.
