Statement on the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College

October 6, 2022

The Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) Board of Trustees made the following announcement, effective October 6, 2022:

After review, AAMD believes that the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College has taken substantial steps to address the concerns raised by its 2014 deaccessioning of works of art to generate funds for operations. It has likewise implemented internal policy changes to ensure such sales are not repeated.

Therefore, AAMD has suspended its sanctions against the Maier Museum and has communicated to its members that the AAMD no longer recommends  that member museums not borrow from or loan works of art to the Maier Museum.

The Maier Museum will be placed on probation for two years, during which time AAMD’s sanctions will remain suspended. At the end of two years, assuming continued institutional advancement and compliance with AAMD’s deaccessioning policy, AAMD will formally remove the sanctions.

The Association takes seriously its stewardship of policies and standards to maintain the highest level of professional practice for our field. We appreciate the positive steps that the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College has taken and look forward to future performance in accordance with its commitments to art museum best practices.
