Assistant or Associate Curator of Latin American Art

           The Tucson Museum of Art’s Assistant or Associate Curator of Latin American Art will be a visionary, collaborative professional responsible for managing, developing, and presenting the Tucson Museum of Art's Latin American Folk Art, Art of the Ancient Americas, Modern and Contemporary, and Spanish Colonial Latin American Art Collection. The curator will bring intellectual vision and practical expertise to interpret, build, and care for the museum's Latin American Art collection. Key responsibilities include curating thought-provoking temporary exhibitions and long-term gallery installations incorporating the museum’s holdings and loans, producing related publications, and delivering public lectures, programs, and other engagement opportunities.

The ideal candidate will adapt to dynamic changes in the museum field; maintain and expand connections with artists, curators, and museum leaders nationally and internationally; and communicate effectively with scholarly and general audiences. We seek a curator eager to develop new initiatives and exhibitions inspired by the museum’s collections as well as the dynamic culture and history of the southwest region of the United States.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·      Oversee the proper care, conservation, installation, and maintenance of the Latin American Art collections.

·      Support the museum’s dynamic community engagement activities, educational programming, and public tours and lectures, and contribute to the accessibility of the museum and its collections and exhibitions.

·      Maintain a network of scholars, museum colleagues, and source communities to effectively and imaginatively develop collections and related research and exhibition projects outside of their primary area of study.

·      Enhance the collection by researching and presenting acquisitions and loans for approval, as well as recommending deaccessions as needed.

·      Assess the condition of collections and identify vulnerable material for preservation and conservation. Work with Collections Manager / Registrar and conservators to support treatments and related research.

·      Collaborate with the Curatorial, Collections, Education, and Engagement departments to develop and implement a strategic, balanced, and thought-provoking exhibition program and to develop innovative approaches to permanent collection installations.

·      Partner with the museum’s CEO and Director of Advancement and Strategic Initiatives to engage in advancement efforts in support of curatorial priorities, such as actively seeking and cultivating collectors and donors for both funding and gifts of art.

·      Collaborate with the Engagement & Inclusion and Education departments to help develop and implement public programs, activities, and events that are exhibition and collection-based and to provide docent training.

·      Author grant proposals for exhibition, research, publication, and conservation support.

·      Advance the execution of the museum’s Strategic and IDEA Plans, emphasizing community-based curatorial and interpretive strategies when appropriate.


Knowledge & Skills


·      3 - 5 years of curatorial experience at an accredited arts institution, an M.A. in Art History, Latin American Studies, or a related field (Ph.D. preferred).

·      Knowledge of legal, ethical, and social considerations for objects of cultural heritage, including UNESCO Cultural Properties Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and related federal and international initiatives.

·      A record of scholarly publications.

·      Fluent or professional proficiency in Spanish.

·      Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
