MOFAC Curator
Full-time year-round position to coordinate and ensure security of the exhibition and storage of the Museum of Florida's Art and Culture (MOFAC) Collection.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as Curator of the Museum of Florida's Art and Culture (MOFAC).
- Designs, plans, coordinates and conducts educational museum programs, workshops, and master classes for SFSC students, community members, and school groups.
- Works closely with supervisor to coordinate, store, and inventory exhibits.
- Plans and coordinates the exhibition of MOFAC's art collection in safe viewing areas.
- Coordinates the release of art work for loan off campus, and maintains appropriate documentation of the release, transfer, and return of those items.
- Ensures that secure storage is provided for those parts of the collection not on current display.
- Maintains an inventory of all pieces, including appraised values of same, as needed.
- Plans and coordinates promotional materials for MOFAC; Assists with creating and maintaining MOFAC Web site.
- Makes recommendations, when deemed necessary, to decline to display any piece(s) which in judgment of Curator may be inappropriate.
- Expands the MOFAC collection by purchasing new acquisitions and securing donations of significant pieces demonstrative of Florida's art, history, culture and/or anthropology.
- Serves as primary resource to the public and researchers on the rich historical tradition of Florida art and culture.
- Represents the College in a professional manner.
- Provides consistent public viewing hours for MOFAC and ensures coverage for those times by maintaining an effective docent program.
- Recruits docents and provides training for MOFAC docents.
- Seeks funding in association with SFSC Foundation, SFSC grants department and Wildstein Center for the Performing Arts, through grants, sponsorships, memberships, donations and other fundraising activities.
- Works closely with the Business Office to ensure appropriate accounting and insurance procedures.
- Responsible for coordinating, documenting, and implementing all unit action planning, outcomes assessment, and institutional effectiveness efforts within the scope of administrative supervision.
- Serves as chair of the MOFAC advisory committee.
- Oversees the curatorship of the art gallery in the Alan Jay Wildstein Center for the Performing Arts and coordinates exhibits in administration building galleries as needed.
- Manages MOFAC budget.
- Acts as an ambassador of the Museum and to represent the Museum locally, regionally, and statewide.
- May teach one art class during fall and/or spring semester.
- Monitors and promotes progress toward meeting the goals and objectives of the College's Equity Update Report.
- Contributes to unit planning, assessment, and college institutional effectiveness efforts.
- Acts as a Campus Security Authority (CSA)/responsible person for Title IX and Clery Act compliance. Must participate in all required CSA/responsible person training.
- Acts in accordance with local, state, and federal laws/regulations as well as College policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Educational: Bachelor's or Bachelor of Fine arts degree in visual arts, art history, museum studies or a closely related field required. Master's degree in Art (or a related Master's degree and 18 graduate hours in Art) preferred.
Experiential: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an art museum or art gallery required. Experience as a curator strongly preferred. Post-secondary teaching experience preferred. Experience in museum administration and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) required. Experience with Word Press a plus.
Other: Knowledge of Florida art strongly preferred. Must have good oral and written communication skills and exhibit excellent work and personal habits. Must be able to work collaboratively with SFSC faculty, public school educators and other museum administrators.
Must also possess: Strong public speaking skills to lead group discussions, classes, and tours in a wide range of cross-disciplinary topics; ability to cultivate donors and author grant proposals; ability to strategically plan and implement long-term goals; strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills; excellent problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills; and ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds.
