Executive Director of the Williamstown + Atlanta Art Conservation Center

The Willimastown + Atlanta Art Conservation Center (W+AACC) seeks an experienced and visionary leader to serve as its Executive Director (“ED”). Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the ED will be responsible for the overall strategic direction, financial stability, and operational excellence of the organization. The ED will contribute to and cultivate a positive professional workplace culture, promoting staff engagement and alignment.

The ED will grow the organization’s client base, expanding its impact and network within its supportive local arts community and beyond. The ED will secure grants from philanthropic organizations (e.g. (endowments, foundations and similar) to allow W+AACC’s conservators to pursue academic and research initiatives.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

·  Develop and implement a long-term strategic plan to guide the organization’s financial stability, artistic and educational programming, and community engagement.

·  Establish and build relationships with new clients and yet to be explored new directions to support future growth.

·  Promote and encourage a collaborative workplace with open communication among staff and conservators, and between departments.

·  Strengthen relationships with founding members, including the Clark Art Institute, Williams College Museum of Art, and the High Museum of Art.

Financial Management

·  Prepare and manage the organization’s budgets; analyze financial performance against the budgets, adjust and act as needed; provide regular updates to the Board of Trustees.

·  Ensure financial health through effective resource allocation, fundraising strategies including grants from corporations, foundations, and governmental agencies as well as gifts from individuals and cost control measures.

·  Diligently monitor project pipelines from the Conservation Labs (Paintings, Paper, Objects, Furniture and Frames) to ensure accuracy, timely completion, and transparency with clients.

Operational Oversight

·  Lead the day-to-day operations of the organization in Williamstown and Atlanta including staff management, facilities maintenance, and administrative functions.

·  Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards of the profession.

·  Identify and implement opportunities to achieve continuous improvement of processes.

·  Travel regularly to Atlanta and elsewhere, as needed.

Talent Manager and Developer

·  Ensure the organization employs effective practices for attracting, developing, and retaining staff.

·  Build and manage a high-performing team.

·  Ensure staff are assessed periodically and that issues are addressed promptly and with resolution.

·  Assure that the organization follows appropriate policies and procedures related to Human Resources.

Advancement and Development

·  Actively work with the Board of Trustees to enhance financial resources to sustain and grow the organization.

·  Conceptualize, establish, and implement development programs and fundraising strategies to attain the financial goals set by the Board of Trustees, as well as the academic objectives of the conservators.

·  Lead all advancement and development efforts including individual and planned giving, grant writing, membership, and fundraising events.

Communications and Outreach

·  Cultivate strong relationships with artists, patrons, community leaders and local and national arts organizations to enhance the organization’s visibility and impact.

·   Develop and implement marketing and communications strategies to promote the organization’s programs, events, and achievements to a broad audience.

·  Lead public relations efforts; represent the organization at industry events and conferences.

Board Relations

·  Collaborate closely with the Board of Trustees.

·  Provide regular updates on organizational progress, strategic initiatives, engagement, development, and financial performance.

Required Skills

·  5+ years executive level experience leading, managing, and developing a team

·  Show demonstrated fiscal responsibility and ability to create and manage budgets

·  Exceptional emotional intelligence and professional presence

·  Manages confidential matters with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment

·  Display flexibility and openness in daily work and encourage others to stay open to change and improvement

·  Accept and readily adapt to changing priorities, innovative ideas, strategies, procedures, and methods

·  Will respect coworkers and adapt behaviors to work effectively with diverse groups of people and situations

·  Show demonstrated ability to manage people on a day-to-day basis and inspire a high level of commitment and performance

·  Excellent written and oral communication

·  High-level strategic planning skills

·  Demonstrated success in a demanding environment managing multiple projects

·  Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Education and Experience

·  Advanced degree in art history, art conservation, or a related field

·  Leadership role in a museum or a similar environment caring for collections
