The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation (SRGF)’s most senior financial executive and a key strategic partner to the Foundation’s Director and CEO. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the CFO provides forward-thinking, data-informed leadership to ensure the long-term financial health and agility of the institution while advancing its mission.  This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative, mission-driven, and commercially minded financial leader to shape the future of a world renowned, not-for-profit arts institution. The CFO will bring a balance of rigor, integrity, and creativity, and will champion sound fiscal stewardship and budget management while enabling innovation and growth across the Foundation.

The CFO will lead the financial strategy, accounting operations, compliance, risk management, and investment oversight functions. This leader is also responsible for supporting the Board’s Budget and Financial Planning, Investment, and Audit Committees.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Financial Leadership

• Serve as a thought partner to the Director and CEO and the Senior Leadership Team on institutional strategy, financial sustainability, and risk-reward decisions.
• Lead long-range financial planning, scenario modeling, and investment strategy aligned with organizational priorities and mission outcomes.
• Evaluate opportunities for earned revenue, partnerships, and operational efficiencies with a commercial mindset within a nonprofit context.
• Translate complex financial data into compelling, actionable insights for internal and external stakeholders.
• Collaborate with leaders of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (Guggenheim NY) and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice (PGC) and program and department leaders across the Foundation to assess the financial impact of key decisions and empower these colleagues with data to drive outcomes.
• Model accountability, sound judgment, and the highest levels of integrity in all financial activities.

Accounting, Controls, and Compliance

• Oversee accounting, audit, payroll, compliance, and internal controls with a commitment to transparency and stewardship.
• Ensure the organization’s compliance with GAAP, FASB, IRS, and other regulatory standards.
• Continuously assess and improve financial systems, procedures, and controls to support evolving organizational needs and mitigate risk.
• Partner with IT and external vendors to maintain secure, functional, and future-ready financial systems.

Investment Oversight

• Guide SRGF’s investment strategy in collaboration with the Investment Committee and in alignment with long-term institutional objectives.
• Collaborate with the Investment Committee and external advisors to oversee portfolio management, cash flow, liquidity, and risk posture.

Organizational Partnership and Communication

• Act as a bridge between finance and staff at the Guggenheim NY and PGC to support cross-departmental collaboration and financial literacy.
• Act as a liaison between SRGF and its longstanding partners at Guggenheim Bilbao and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
• Foster open communication and partnership with Advancement, Legal, Curatorial, and Operations teams to support mission-aligned decision-making and budget management.
• Ensure donor and grant restrictions are properly tracked and reported with transparency and rigor.

Leadership and Culture

• Lead and inspire a Finance team of seven, including the Controller and Director of Budgeting, in a culture rooted in collaboration, service, and excellence.
• Nurture a culture of integrity, accountability, emotional intelligence (EQ), and agility in the face of complexity and change.
• Serve as a role model for intercultural competence and inclusive leadership, supporting the organization’s values and priorities.
• Engage proactively with board members, donors, external auditors, and peer institutions.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

• Bachelor’s degree and CPA required in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.  MBA, or equivalent advanced degree preferred.
• 15+ years of progressively responsible experience in financial leadership roles, ideally within nonprofit, mission-driven institutions.
• Demonstrated experience with fund accounting, endowments, restricted funds, and complex compliance requirements.
• Sophisticated understanding of financial risk management, trade-offs, and scenario planning.
• Proven ability to lead financial transformation projects and navigate ambiguity with agility and composure.
• Track record of recruiting, retaining, and developing talent suitable to the needs of the organization.
• Contemporary data fluency and experience with responsible and innovative use of technology to streamline work processes and gain efficiencies.
• High emotional intelligence, intercultural fluency, and a collaborative leadership style.
• • Exceptional communication and presentation skills; ability to distill financial issues into accessible insights and presentations for non-financial audiences.

Compensation

• $300,000 - $350,000 Annually
