Chief of Business Enterprises (Retail, Events, Visitor Experience & Earned Revenue)

The Milwaukee Art Museum seeks a strategic, collaborative, and commercially minded Chief of Business Enterprises to lead the Museum’s earned income portfolio while protecting and elevating the visitor experience and brand.

Reporting to the Donna and Donald Baumgartner Director (Museum Director), this senior leadership role oversees key visitor-facing revenue functions, including Admissions/Visitor Services, Retail (Museum Store), Event Rentals, and the outsourced Café and Parking operations. The Chief of Business Enterprises sets earned revenue direction, drives cross-department alignment, ensures strong operating discipline, and provides ongoing analysis and refinement of earned income streams.

This role works closely with other senior leaders to ensure institutional priorities are met when areas of responsibility overlap, including support of the visitor-to-member journey and internal mission-driven programming. The successful candidate will bring strong financial acumen, operational leadership, sound judgment, and a consistent focus on accountability and results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set the annual earned revenue plan and multi-year roadmap for Admissions/Visitor Services, Retail, Event Rentals, and externally operated Café/Catering and parking garages.
  • Translate organizational goals into clear targets, KPIs, and monthly operating rhythms for each area.
  • Analyze visitor data and provide data-backed recommendations on pricing, hours, staffing models, investment tradeoffs, and impacts on visitor experience.
  • Directly lead and coach the Director of Visitor Experience, Director of Events, and Director of Museum Store.
  • Ensure training, staffing approaches, and escalation protocols are consistent across visitor-facing areas and aligned with organizational values.
  • Drive admissions performance, event rentals growth, retail profitability, and strong management of external business partners.
  • Foster consistent cross-functional communication and support institutional decision-making with a mission-first mindset.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive leadership experience overseeing earned revenue functions in a public-facing environment such as a museum, attraction, hospitality organization, venue, tourism business, retail setting, events business, or similar, including responsibility for multiple revenue lines.
  • Demonstrated success growing net earned revenue through strategy and execution, including pricing, product/package design, sales pipeline discipline, operating hours/staffing models, and service standards.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, KPI dashboards, and translating data into clear executive recommendations.
  • Experience balancing guest experience and brand with commercial outcomes.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present clearly to the Museum Director, Board of Trustees, and senior leadership.
  • Museum or cultural nonprofit experience is strongly preferred.
