POSITION TITLE: Assistant Curator
SUPERVISED BY: Chief Curator

general responsibilities:
The Assistant Curator is a key member of the Curatorial Department at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Reporting to the Chief Curator, this role supports the exhibition program and collection development through research, intra- and inter- departmental collaboration, and project coordination. The position provides opportunities to curate original exhibitions, manage departmental projects, grow the collection, contribute to fundraising efforts, and perform outreach. This position is open to generalists or specialists in any area; the ideal candidate is a strong researcher and excellent communicator who can translate complex ideas to diverse audiences. The Assistant Curator will act as a core collaborator across the museum, working with other departments for programming and promotional initiatives.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
ExhibitioNS
- Coordinate Art on BRiC Walls, an annual juried exhibition carried out in collaboration with the City of Boca Raton
- Assist with research for internally organized exhibitions
- Assist with logistics and project management for internally and externally organized exhibitions
- Curate original exhibitions and installations (level of supervision depending on experience)
- Collaborate with Chief Curator and Learning & Engagement team to develop supplemental content for Bloomberg Connects; manage visual and audio collateral and Bloomberg production schedule
- Collaborate with Learning & Engagement team on conceptualizing exhibition-related programming for youth and adult audiences
- Provide docent training on internally curated exhibitions
- Participate in Art in Focus program (30-minute deep-dives into works of art)
- Participate in other exhibition-related programming
COLLECTIONS
- Curate “First Encounters,” a biannually rotating collection installation
- Research the collection and create object descriptions/labels for gallery installations, collection database, and publications
- Contribute to database management
- Maintain physical and digital departmental records
- Grow collection through writing proposals for Museum Exchange
- Participate in gallery and studio visits
- Research proposed objects for donation; present findings and recommendations in internal collection meetings
- Help prepare for and participate in Collections Committee meetings
FUNDRAISING
- Under supervision of Chief Curator, collaborate with Advancement Department on preparing grant applications
- Develop relationships with artists, community stakeholders, and museum members
OUTREACH
- Establish schedule and write content for “Work of the Week” collection highlight
- In collaboration with Social Media Coordinator, establish social media plan for changing exhibitions; contribute to content
- Work with artists, lenders, and guest curators to develop general social media content related to collections and exhibitions
- Promote exhibitions to interest groups and other stakeholders
OTHER
- Attend Museum functions and events as needed
- Respond to inquiries or requests
- Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- Advanced degree in art history, museum studies, or a related field (or equivalent education + experience)
- Three + years’ experience in an art institution (or equivalent education + experience)
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Organizational skills and keen attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
- Strong interpersonal, diplomatic, and negotiating skills
- Self-motivation, with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Ability to work a flexible schedule of hours to include some evenings and weekends
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS
- Familiarity with Microsoft and Adobe products
- Experience with a collection management database software
- Experience with public outreach/social media
HOURS/BENEFITS:
Full Time 40 hours per week- Exempt/Salaried
$45,000-55,000
