Current Opportunities
Director and President
Dayton Art Institute, Director and President
Position Description and Institutional Overview
The Dayton Art Institute is the Miami Valley’s premier fine art museum, accredited by AAM, offering unique and unforgettable art experiences for every visitor. Founded in 1919 as the Dayton Museum of Arts, the Dayton Art Institute began as a small art school with a growing collection and a mission rooted in creativity and education. By 1927, the institution was renamed the Dayton Art Institute to reflect the importance of its art school and its expanding role in the cultural life of the Miami Valley. Thanks to a transformational $2 million gift from Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell, construction soon began on the museum’s iconic Italian Renaissance-inspired home overlooking downtown Dayton. Designed by renowned architect Edward B. Green, the landmark building opened in 1930 and remains one of the city’s most recognizable cultural destinations. Today, the Dayton Art Institute houses more than 27,000 works of art spanning American, European, Asian and African collections, along with photography, Native American art and works from the ancient world. Beyond its collection galleries, the museum offers world-class exhibitions, dynamic programming and memorable experiences for visitors of all ages, including the Lange Family Experiencenter designed for children and families.
The museum currently has nearly 60 employees and an endowment valued at approximately $20 million. The museum’s annual operating budget is approximately $6 million.
The DAI is a 501c3 not-for-profit organization. It receives funds from the Ohio Arts Council, from Culture Works and the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District as well as from its members and patrons.
Current Situation and Opportunity
The next Director will play a leading role in providing artistic and programmatic leadership for the institution, while enhancing the museum’s annual revenues and its endowment. A time-honored way to achieve these goals is via a compelling and dynamic program of exhibitions and acquisitions which maintain traditional audiences and attract new ones.
Building on the DAI’s established base of community support, an enthusiastic Director should be able to animate the museum family, gain new adherents and supporters and enable this enhanced group to increase the museum’s fundraising results through thoughtful cultivation and meaningful community engagement.
At the same time, the new Director would ensure that the day-to-day operations and internal systems of the museum are functioning at a high level to inspire trust both within and outside the museum walls. Building and sustaining a high functioning team is crucial for a successful museum and this depends on a collective internal spirit that reflects the optimism and energy that new and experienced leadership can provide. Effective communication skills both internally and externally will be important for the next Director. And, of course, creating and maintaining a diverse workplace is an important part of this team-based approach.
An experienced art professional, grounded in art history, can inspire audiences and colleagues, and those assets should be coupled with a strong understanding of managing the financial components of a successful art museum.

About Dayton
Dayton, Ohio sits at the crossroads of opportunity, perfectly positioned between Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis, offering the accessibility of a major hub with the authenticity and affordability of a tight-knit Midwest community. But Dayton is more than a convenient location; it’s a city fueled by innovation, creativity and resilience. Founded in 1796 along the Great Miami River, Dayton quickly grew from a small canal town into a hub of mechanical and industrial innovation that helped shape the spirit of discovery and progress that still defines the Miami Valley today. Thanks to the pioneering work of the Wright brothers, Dayton earned its place as the birthplace of aviation, a legacy that continues through the nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. As one of the region’s largest employers, the base remains a major driver for the area’s economy and forward-thinking spirit. Dayton pairs its historic legacy with a vibrant modern energy. Its thriving arts scene, locally loved restaurants, live music, galleries and community events create a culture that feels both welcoming and lively. Today, Dayton is the sixth-largest city in the state of Ohio with approximately 138,000 residents in the city and 822,000 in the metropolitan area. From riverfront trails and historic neighborhoods to startup spaces and performance venues, Dayton isn’t just a place to live. It’s a place to build, create and belong.
