Curator of Ancient Egyptian, Nubian, and Near Eastern Art

The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University seeks an experienced professional and accomplished scholar to serve as Curator for its preeminent collections of Ancient Egyptian, Nubian, and Near Eastern Art.  The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Art History or a related field; have at least five years of curatorial experience in an accredited museum, and a record of successful exhibition projects and publications.

The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University is home to the most important Egyptian collection in the southeastern United States, and is the only institution in Georgia dedicated to the research and display of ancient Egyptian art and culture.  The Carlos Museum’s Egyptian collection includes objects from the Predynastic period to the Roman period, including sculpture, relief carving, jewelry, papyri, funerary material, and objects from daily life.

The art of ancient Egypt has formed part of the collections at Emory University since 1920, when Dr. William Arthur Shelton of Emory’s School of Theology traveled to Egypt and the Middle East to purchase antiquities.  He brought back wrapped mummies, painted coffins, and many other artifacts that were then, as they are now, among the best-loved material on display.  In 1999 the Carlos Museum acquired a major collection of ancient Egyptian funerary art.  Combined with the Carlos Museum's existing collections, the new acquisitions significantly enhanced Emory’s resources for the study of ancient Egyptian art.  In the last several years, the collections have grown through substantial acquisitions and gifts.

The Curator of Ancient Egyptian, Nubian, and Near Eastern Art reports to the Director, serves on a team of highly skilled collections, education, and administrative staff, and provides leadership for cross-departmental collaboration.  The Curator develops and presents exhibitions, makes acquisitions, provides stewardship for donors, researches and documents the collections, develops didactic materials and programming, works with students and interns, and establishes and maintains strong community and institutional relationships.  The Curator may also teach classes for the Art History Department, the Mediterranean Archaeology Program, or the Middle Eastern Studies Program at Emory University
