Director of Safety and Security
Summary:
The Harvard Art Museums—comprising the Fogg Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum—will open their new Renzo Piano Building Workshop-designed facility to the public on November 16, 2014. The renovation and expansion of the museums’ landmark building at 32 Quincy Street in Cambridge will bring the three museums and their collections together under one roof for the first time, inviting students, faculty, scholars, and the public into one of the world’s great institutions for arts scholarship and research.
At this exciting time in their history, the Harvard Art Museums are looking for an experienced leader to join them as their Director of Safety and Security. The Director will be responsible for developing and implementing all aspects of security functions, including the day-to-day safety and security of the staff, visitors, collections, and property of the Harvard Art Museums. Reporting to the Deputy Director of the Harvard Art Museums with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Chief of Harvard University Police Department, the Director oversees and supervises a staff of full-time, part-time and contingent workers assigned to multiple facilities.
Responsibilities:
• Ensure the security of the art collection and the safety of staff, visitors, and other building occupants.
• Assess staffing needs and maintain effective staffing levels, for both daily operations a well as for special events. Coordinate with other departments to ensure sufficient safety and security of the staff, visitors, collections and property of the Harvard Art Museums.
• Provide direct supervision and support to security managers and oversee hiring, supervision and performance management of all security staff.
• Negotiate and manage labor contracts and labor relations issues and opportunities.
• Consult and collaborate with Curatorial, Collections Management and other museum departments to define security needs for exhibitions and ensure security of shipments and receipts of works of art.
• Ensure effective planning, development, administration, and operations of departmental budget and personnel.
• Identify, analyze, interpret, and respond to facilities conditions, personnel and visitor situations, and environmental factors that affect the safety and security of Harvard Art Museums. Advise on best practices. Oversee the development and implementation of security, safety and emergency related programs, policies and procedures and provides staff with information and updates on the proper interpretation and application.
• Oversee the thorough investigation of all incidents. Collaborate with relevant museum and Harvard University departments to ensure all records and reports are properly written, distributed and filed.
• Develop and deliver recommendations, notices, procedures, professional development and training.
• Oversee regular safety drills and training sessions; conduct or participate in relevant inspections and assessments and provide corrective recommends as necessary.
• Oversee all aspects of new and existing security systems, technology and devices including planning, evaluation, purchase, enhancement, installation, testing and servicing.
• Manage vendor relationships and supervise contractors.
• Work with colleagues within Harvard University to ensure cohesion of security
measures, communication, and support.
• Participate in Harvard Art Museums and Harvard University task forces and project teams.
• Stays current on cultural property protection issues.
• Maintain close working relationship with Harvard Police Department.
Qualifciations:
• 8+ years of security management, administration, and supervisory experience.
• Experience with security practices and procedures in an art museum
environment highly desirable.
• Demonstrated success leading teams in publicly facing environments with experience managing a unionized workforce preferred.
• Exceptional leadership skills with experience hiring and developing strong teams in publicly facing environments; experience managing a unionized workforce a plus.
• Proven ability to motivate a staff to successful outcomes.
• Strong relationship building skills with a proven ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.
• Demonstrated problem solving skills and initiative, excellent organizational skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.
• BA/BS required; concentration in Criminal Justice, Security or related subject matter a plus.
