Associate Director of Major Gifts

Summary The San Diego Museum of Art is seeking an Associate Director of Major Gifts who will report directly to the Deputy Director of External Affairs. The Associate Director is an integral part of the Development office and will be responsible for working with curatorial, education, and exhibition staff to secure support for these programs. The Associate Director will work to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward individual donors at the major gift level. The Associate Director will maintain his/her own portfolio of approximately 100 donors/ prospects and will create targeted strategies for each donor/prospect resulting in gift closures at maximum levels of support. Responsibilities • Expand major gifts program to identify, cultivate, steward, and acknowledge current and prospective major donors. • Manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects (individual donors and family foundations) giving $10,000 and up annually to attain specific annual goals. • Personally solicit and steward major donors for existing an new through face-to-face visits, independently and with board volunteers and senior staff. • Oversee the implementation of a stewardship strategy for members of the Sorolla Society, the Museum’s existing planned giving program. • Support executive staff, board members, and other volunteers in all aspects of donor stewardship and solicitation; provide training/coaching as needed. • Prepare written materials, including relevant case statements, proposals, information bulletins, and correspondences with major donors to inform them of the impact of their gift(s), and to keep them up-to-date about Museum happenings and client needs. • Participate in the design and implementation of major donor events, house parties, tours, travel, and volunteer opportunities to keep current and prospective major donors informed and engaged. • Participate on Board development committees and in setting major giving goals, policies, guidelines, and reporting standards. Qualifications • The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree and at least 5-7 years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, with a successful track record in donor cultivation and major gifts solicitation. This individual must have a proven ability to close six-figure gifts. • A self-starter with a sense of urgency, a clear set of priorities, and a strong work ethic; Must have the ability to adapt quickly to, plan for, and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced setting. • A passion for art, art history, and museums is critical to be an effective spokesperson and representative of the Museum. Knowledge of the local philanthropic community is a plus. • Capability to personally build, develop, and retain strong, positive relationships with trustees, major donors, community leaders, volunteers, colleagues, and other stakeholders. • Ability to motivate, excite, and educate both internal and external resources. This person should also have the ability to inspire staff and others involved with the Museum to be effective resources in fundraising endeavors. • Outstanding leadership ability combined with a depth of intellect, diplomatic skills, and an appreciation for human dynamics. Must be goal-oriented, self-motivated, and able to demonstrate great individual initiative with an eye toward results. • Must have a willingness to attend events in the evenings and on weekends. • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written. Bilingual in Spanish a plus. • Expertise in Altru donor software preferred.Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows-based computer applications.
