The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts seeks an exceptional leader to further its mission and manage the Art and Education Programs Division of the museum.  Reporting to the Museum Director, this position will oversee the operation of five departments including Curatorial, Education, Statewide Partnerships, Exhibitions and the VMFA Library.  This position will guide, direct and support departmental heads in the areas of policy and procedure, special projects, work flow, long-range goals, budget development, purchasing and staffing.   Additionally, this position will serve in the dual-role of Chief Curator to provide curatorial and administrative leadership; represent curatorial priorities and concerns; oversee the growth of collections; and develop strategies for creating and attracting exhibitions of regional, national and international significance.

Qualifications:  Applicants should have an advanced degree in  Art History, Art Administration, Museum Education or Museum Studies from a recognized institution or equivalent training.  A PhD is preferred.  Additionally, applicants will have a minimum of 5-10 years senior-level experience working in a Museum and 10 or more years of experience in positions related to collection development and presentation, exhibition planning, and/or museum education.   The successful candidate will also have proven administrative, supervisory, leadership, interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills.  He/she must possess the ability to manage financial affairs and develop long-range plans; the ability to plan, prioritize and manage many projects and assignments at once; and the ability to analyze, assess and make recommendations and decisions based upon a sophisticated understanding of museum policies and practices.  To apply, log onto the Commonwealth of Virginia Online Employment System at http://jobs.virginia.gov and submit your application. resume or C.V. and letter of intent no later than 5:00 pm on November 21, 2014.     Please contact the HR office at 804.340.1485 if you need assistance.
