Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block
The Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block’s mission is Connecting Art to Life. The Museum was founded 1924 in the El Presidio Historic District of downtown Tucson. It is Southern Arizona’s premier presenter of fine art and art education programs.

The Museum features in-house curated and touring exhibitions of Modern and Contemporary, Native American, American West, Latin American, and Asian art. With a $3.2 M annual budget and a collection of more than 8,500 objects, the 74,000 square foot Museum offers tours of exhibits, education programs, and studio art classes to the public.
The main Museum is in a contemporary building constructed in 1973, but it also has several historic structures circa 19th and early 20th C. encompassing an entire four-acre city block.  The historic Goodman Pavilion of Western Art displays the Museum's collection of Art of the American West, the Museum’s restaurant, Café a la C’Art, is housed in another adobe building, and there is a completely restored 1907 mission revival home built by the first mayor of the city, as well as other exhibition, library and studio spaces."


Job Description and Distinguishing Characteristics
The Chief Executive Officer reports to the Board of Trustees and is responsible for administering the policies set by the Board, maximizing and enhancing the resources of the Museum, managing its operations, and providing leadership for the Museum’s growth and development. The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of the Tucson Museum of Art in accordance with Board-established policy.

Typical Examples of Work Performed
• Within the existing parameters of the collection, set the artistic vision for the Museum and provide oversight and direction for curatorial affairs;
• Direct the study, preservation, and display of TMA permanent and loan collections;
• Oversee the acquisition, by purchase or gift, of artistic works that enhance TMA’s collection and conform to TMA’s stated objectives as set forth in its mission statement and collections policies;
• Develop and supervise TMAs exhibition and education programs to maximize their effectiveness and suitability to TMA’s mission;
• Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees and of all committees, other than any committee appointed by the President to review the performance of the CEO;
• Oversee the Museum’s activities and practices including ensuring that TMA is in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local legal requirements;
• Ensure that TMA’s activities are conducted in accordance with the highest standards of professional museum practice;
• Supervise the activities of TMA staff and assure that staff performance conforms to established TMA policy;
• Employ, evaluate, terminate, and provide support and direction for a highly qualified staff, and assure an open communication environment that generates high morale and productivity;
• Initiate and coordinate TMA fund-raising efforts; oversee and participate in a comprehensive audience development, membership, and revenue-producing programs;
• Preserve and maintain TMA assets;
• Prepare and monitor annual, capital, and project budgets and provide Board with timely financial data for budgeting decisions and fund-raising plans;
• Ensure that staff, operations, and programming remain within the allocated financial resources;
• Endeavor to make TMA a source of pride for the Tucson community and the audiences it serves;
• Serve as the chief spokesperson of the Museum and be highly visible in the community;
• Effectively represent the Museum to all governmental, professional, civic, and private agencies as well as the media, enhancing TMA’s image and reputation;
• Interpret and communicate community needs, attitudes, and concerns affecting the Museum to the Board of Trustees;
• Plan and direct the repair and maintenance of the buildings and grounds, and communicate renovation and construction needs to the Board of Trustees;
• Work with the Museum’s Support Organizations to ensure that goals and overall museum mission are being promoted.

Minimum Requirements/Knowledge/Skills
• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in art history, art administration, museum studies, or related fields, preferably supplemented by graduate-level study or a graduate degree; 
• A minimum of five years relevant experience in senior museum administration;
• Considerable knowledge of museum and arts administration;
• Knowledge of professional collections management standards, policies, legal and ethical practices, and the care, handling, and preservation of museum objects;
• Knowledge of art conservation techniques and practices;
• Ability to conduct independent research on subjects related to the museum’s collections;
• Ability to assist in the preparation of grant proposals;
• High level of verbal and written ability;
• An accomplished museum professional who will enhance the museum’s reputation, build its collections, and expand its audience and base of support;
• An experienced manager who is financially astute;
• A relationship builder who values and can work closely with staff, board, donors, volunteers, government officials, and others critical to the future of the museum;
• A communicator who will reach inward to the staff and membership, and out to the community in all its diversity, and who is not only comfortable in this role but enjoys it;
• A persuasive leader and a dynamic, energetic, and politic individual with a deep interest in the visual arts and a commitment to the evolving role of art museums today;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
