Curator
The Columbia Museum of Art seeks a creative and energetic professional for the position of Curator to contribute to a dynamic and diverse exhibition program and to further develop the depth and quality of the permanent collection. The curator plays a significant role in supporting the CMA’s primary mission, which is to provide meaningful experiences in the visual arts to Columbia and the region.
The ideal curator will have a record of originating and/or participating in the overall organization of imaginative, exciting and thought-provoking exhibitions. He or she will be enthusiastic about engaging with the community through dynamic exhibitions, tours and lectures in order to make the visual arts more accessible. The position reports to the Chief Curator and is an integral member of the curatorial team. The successful candidate will thrive in a team atmosphere and can build excellent relationships with a variety of people, including staff, donors, volunteers, artists, and the general public.
The Museum opened a 128,000 sq. ft. facility in 1998 with 25 galleries designed by George Sexton Associates of Washington, D.C., and significant undeveloped space is earmarked for future gallery expansion. The CMA’s collection of over 7,000 objects ranges from antiquity to the present day with a focus on European, American, Contemporary, and Asian art.
Requirements include demonstrated scholarship, M.A. or Ph.D. in art history or a related field (strength in one of the museum’s collecting areas desirable), at least five years curatorial experience, and excellent communications skills. Salary commensurate with qualifications plus excellent benefits.
