 Executive Director

 The Executive Director is responsible for the administration, vision, direction, and development of the museum and for the fundraising activities required for its support.  Leadership includes defining the scope and direction of the institution’s administration, exhibitions and public educational programming. Reporting to the Board of Trustees. The ED provides the leadership, management and supervision of the TMA staff of some 25+ associates and assumes management of the museum’s day-to-day operations. 

Major areas of responsibility include operational and strategic planning, institutional advancement, governance, financial management of a $3 million budget, and community and stakeholder relations. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Actively support the mission of the institution working with board members, staff, donors, volunteers, artist, businesses, and community at large. 

Encourage the Board’s interest in best practices and recognition for excellence; keep trustees informed on a regular basis; help identify and cultivate the next generation of Board leadership.

Ensure ongoing overall excellence, and consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and marketing.

Launch and manage the 2018-2022 strategic plan initiatives and work to attain all goals.

Together with staff, ensure that the museum maintains its commitment to programmatic excellence and financial stability.

Monitor the preservation and maintenance of the museum’s physical assets.

Take a leadership role for the development and fundraising activities, and work in the collaboration with the Board and development staff to cultivate established relationships.

Aggressively seek new sources of support for the general fund.

Work with staff to build an exciting and broad-based membership program that offers clear benefits to members and draws new audiences to the institution.

Make a plan and set goals and be accountable for all annual earned revenue streams.

Assume the lead role in completion of the Endowment Campaign

Supervise 5 senior management direct reports including the Deputy Director of Finance, Operations & HR, Deputy Director of Education & Visitor Services, Deputy Director of Exhibitions & Collections, Deputy Director of Development, Deputy Director of Marketing & Communications, and Grants Manager.

Install, maintain and support sound financial management processes to ensure accurate forecasting of revenues and expenses and tight control of every project and expense.

Supervise the management team in administering their respective financial and budgetary duties within current available financial resources.

Assure that the TMA meets its budget year by year and has sufficient cash flow to meet expense needs and assure that the TMA remains debt-free.

Embrace the role of primary spokesperson and chief fundraiser for the Taubman Museum of Art.

While working with Deputy Director of Marketing, regularly communicate museum programming, mission and information on all media and social media platforms.

Represent the TMA in local, regional, statewide, and national organizations to further the best interests of the institution; brings pertinent information back to the TMA staff, trustees, and volunteers.

Working with the Deputy Director of Exhibitions and Collections, insures that the collections of original works of art and works on loan to the museum are presented, developed, cared for, researched, and promoted in a manner serving the mission and community.

Ensure the care and protection of the collection, updating and amending existing collection policies as needed.

Develop the collections and preserve present works of art to promote education initiatives.

Evaluate all new and existing programming and work with staff to make changes as needed.

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Proven fund-raiser with significant success in an arts-related fiel

Business leadership experience with a foundational knowledge of entrepreneur skill

Effective communicator capable of developing and maintaining a wide sphere of influenc

An individual committed to the importance of the art, history, and the individual artist

Training, Education and Experience:

Minimum BA required in Art, Art History, Arts Administration, Museum Management or related field.  Minimum 10 years senior non-profit management experience.

 Special Requirements:

Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver's license and maintain a driving record acceptable to the Taubman Museum of Art.  Must be available to work flexible hours including attending events on average of 2-3 nights per week and frequent weekend days and evenings.
