Deputy Director of Exhibitions and Education

Job Summary:
The Deputy Director of Exhibitions and Education provides creative leadership and implements the
Taubman Museum of Art year-round schedule of exhibitions and educational programming as an
integrated practice and with a holistic approach for the visitor.

This includes the creation/curation of
visitor-centered exhibitions and related materials, long range planning of the exhibition schedule and
contracts, and direction of the curatorial and education staff with oversight of educational and public
programming for children, youth, families, and adults; the Intern, Docent and Volunteer Programs; the
traveling exhibition program; and all visitor engagement areas including retail.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:
● Provide effective leadership and management of the Visitor Experience. This includes the
Exhibitions and Collections Department and the Education and Visitor Engagement Department,
which presently includes the staff of exhibitions, collections/registration, education and visitor
engagement with 8 full-time and 3-5 part-time staff.
● Create and support a focused visitor-centered approach to everything the team works on.
● Provide leadership and responsibility for the planning and delivery of an integrated exhibition
educational portfolio (12-18 per year) to include banner exhibitions, oversight of the development
of a package of traveling exhibitions, mural, atrium and sculpture garden art projects, as well as
high quality participatory educational programming and interpretation tools.
● Serve as curator of multiple exhibitions per year working directly with artists and institutions
including the research, development, and writing of related materials. Negotiate loans and
contracts with national and international museums and galleries as well as private collections,
artists, and lenders. Work with curatorial staff as co-curators of exhibitions.
● Provide guidance and oversight in the development of interpretation plans and interactive
educational activities accompanying all exhibitions underpinned by solid educational goals and
objectives that serve a diverse audience and myriad of learning styles.
● Oversee the development and stewardship of the current collection of over 2,000 objects along
with the Executive Director and the Registrar. Determine collections and conservation priorities,
plan and execute accession and deaccession processes to strengthen the collection, and ensure
the highest standards of ethical practice are met in these pursuits. Assist in formulating the
Museum’s acquisitions strategy and co-lead with the Registrar the collections committee.
● As chief curator, provide leadership and oversight in the acquisition, preservation, exhibition,
educational programming, and research activities associated with our outstanding permanent
collection.
● Serve as a lead to build partnerships with other non-profits, public and private schools,
universities and community organizations that will enhance the educational potential of the
museum, and develop new and expanded audiences for children, youth, families, and adults.
● Oversee and lead team in development and delivery of an interesting menu of programs including
the areas of museum school, tours, Art Venture, and adult and children programs that will engage
educators, adults, families, schools and young audiences with the exhibitions and collections of
the museum bringing people and art together for discovery, learning, and enjoyment.
● Write and/or oversee the commissioning of texts for catalogues, exhibition-related material and
information, as appropriate. Research and oversee the production of all publications, ensuring
that each contributes to the artist’s oeuvre, is cost-effective, educational and delivered on time.
● Lead and co-lead initiatives such as Homeward Bound Juried Triennial, Biannual Art Go Bloom,
and Biannual CanStruction.
● Oversee training of all staff and volunteers with timely information necessary to advertise, and
promote exhibitions and develop interpretive materials. This will include lectures and talks to
various constituencies groups including sponsors, grant-giving bodies, donors, specialists groups,
the press and the public as well as teaching educators and students.
● Ensure that Development staff is provided with sufficient information to prepare applications to
individuals, sponsors, Trusts and Foundations and other revenue streams. Work collaboratively
with Development in securing grants and in-kind gifts for exhibitions.
● Oversee and be on-site to support the team and lead programs on high visibility days and
evenings for openings, First Fridays late night programming, Dickens of a Christmas, select
Spectacular Saturdays and museum studies classes among others.
● Oversee the provision of customer service procedures and expectations. Ensure that there are
policies in place to gather effective data and feedback to assess and update customer visitor data
strategies, coding, and reporting.
● Serve as a leader and mentor to this talented staff, helping them develop as professionals and
building a collegial, focused department.
● Ensure that all exhibitions and educational projects are delivered within agreed budgets and
deadlines. Keep overall financial control while delegating to staff the day-to-day management of
each budget.
● Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
● Strong project management, supervisory, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
● Proven experience of curating, delivering exhibitions and writing publications.
● Strong teaching skills and ability to deliver content to various audiences
● Proven experience and knowledge of best practices in museum education and participatory
interpretation practices
● Keeps abreast of developments in art, nationally and internationally, through research,
networking, and attending exhibitions. Maintaining an excellent knowledge of contemporary,
historical, and popular art and culture. Including good professional contacts and relationships with
artists, writers and collectors nationally and internationally.
● Robust, flexible, strategic operator with hands-on capability, with the ability to work within a fastmoving
environment and to deliver within restricted time, space and financial resources.
● Excellent oral and written communication skills
● Ability to work with a diverse range of age groups and learning styles
● Excellent computer skills with proficiency in use of spreadsheets, word processing and Windows.


Training, Education and Experience:
Position requires a 4-year college or university degree with major course work in art history, fine art,
museum studies or arts management, with a Masters degree in art history, museum studies, education or
a related field preferred. Museum experience with a minimum of 10 years of experience in curating,
exhibition design, interpretation, educational programming and project management required.


Special Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia driver's license and maintain a driving record acceptable to
the Taubman Museum of Art and its insurance carrier(s). Must be available to work flexible hours
including nights and weekends including openings, first Friday evenings, high traffic Saturdays and
Sundays and other key evening events. May require travel out of town on an occasional basis.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Must be able to stand, walk, and sit; ability to use hands and/or fingers, reaching with hands and arms;
must be able to talk and hear; ability to occasionally climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl
as required; must have the ability to lift up to 40 pounds as needed; must be able to see up close and
have distance vision and have the ability to focus; must be able to work in a moderate noise level office
environment.
