Exhibitions Registrar
Overview
The Portland Art Museum invites applications for the position of Exhibitions Registrar. The Portland Art Museum’s mission is to engage diverse communities through art and film of enduring quality and to collect, preserve, and educate for the enrichment of present and future generations. The Exhibition Registrar performs a critical role in the fulfillment of this mission by coordinating registration of all in-house, borrowed, and traveling exhibitions. This role assists in the stewardship of permanent collections, loans, and associated documentation; and includes supervisory oversight of an assistant registrar and occasional project staff. Essential Functions:
Exhibitions
• Coordinate exhibition logistics including packing, shipping, receiving, unpacking, installation, storage, and courier arrangements.
• Work closely with the collections team, security, conservators, preparators and curators to ensure safe and timely Exhibitions.
• Coordinate and perform incoming and outgoing condition reports.
• Review contracts, exhibition insurance, federal indemnity, and immunity for seizure applications.
• Prepare and maintain highly detailed records.
Supervisory
• Supervise assistant registrar and occasional project staff.
• Serves as a leadership example by being clear on the strategic direction of the department, being accountable and holding others accountable, collaborating with colleagues across the museum, and upholding and promoting the values of respect and transparency in managing people power.
• Promote institutional equity and inclusion goals and support the work.
Collections Stewardship and Documentation
• Assist in storage and handling of permanent collections and loans.
• Support collections management activities including inventory and cataloguing.
Requirements:
• Applicable Project Management and Registration experience.
• Knowledge of best practices and current standards in Museum Registration is highly desirable.
• Strong accuracy, detail orientation and adherence to schedules.
• Demonstrable proficiency in computer systems and databases.
• Effectively communicate verbally and maintain effective working relationship with supervisor, collections colleagues, curators, and other co-workers. Contribute to a positive organizational culture based on mutual respect, collegiality, collaboration and openness to many perspectives.
• Strong written communication skills. Comfort with telephone and email.
• Work collaboratively in an equitable and inclusive framework with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. Comfort working on multiple team-based projects at once.
• Strong leadership skills to motivate teams preferred. Previous supervision experience preferred, including recruitment, performance management, and training.
• Experience with international loans is preferred.
• Experience with budgets preferred.
• Available to work occasional evenings and weekends is preferred.
Application Process:
This position is full-time working 35 hours per week. The salary range is $50,000-$60,000 per year, depending on experience. The position is eligible for the Museum's benefits package first of the month following 30-days of full-time employment.
