Executive Director

The Connecticut River Museum (CRM) seeks an innovative leader as it fulfills a newly broadened mission and completes a very successful capital campaign to enhance its facilities and capacity. The new Executive Director will have the opportunity to bring new ideas and to raise CRM’s profile and dramatically increase its reach and impact. The AAM-accredited museum was founded in 1974 on a historic steamship wharf to offer river/maritime history and culture. CRM recently expanded its scope to include river ecology. Essex is located centrally to urban areas, universities, and cultural attractions. It is in a scenic, affluent area popular with tourists. CRM’s exhibitions, diverse educational programs and special events serve 27,000 people annually. The $1-million budget has been balanced the last four years. RESPONSIBILITIES: work with board members in all aspects of capital fundraising to ensure completion of the campaign; initiate new strategic planning; coordinate with construction manager building the new discovery center; work with staff to furnish new collections storage facility, develop a three-year exhibition plan, develop interpretive plans for new discovery center, and build sustainable operation of the expanded museum. QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in museum studies, public history, nonprofit management, or equivalent education and experience; 5+ years leading a museum or environmental/conservation organization or large department; strong people skills; community-engagement and fundraising track-record; interdisciplinary interests; ambition and self-motivation.
