Supervisory Museum Registrar

Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens offers employees a unique setting filled with passionate people, extraordinary gardens and fabulous collections of art.  The Supervisory Museum Registrar will play a critical role in collaborating with curators, educators, collections and exhibitions to bring the extraordinary life and legacy of Marjorie Merriweather Post, her passion for excellence, gracious hospitality, art, history and gardens to our visitors.


The Supervisory Museum Registrar is responsible for:
• Fostering a collaborative environment to achieve success in key projects such as planning and implementation object moves to a new Collections Center, special exhibitions (2-3 per year), annual mansion cleaning and conservation of mansion and objects.
• Providing leadership to the Collections Team; working closely with direct reports to coach, mentor and maximize team and individual strengths and support career development.
• Partners as part of the exhibition team to determine technical requirements for all objects and assists in the structure of exhibition plans, development and production of exhibitions.
• Ensuring proactive communication around collection process, protocols and standards.
• Manages documentation and logistics for temporary and traveling exhibitions; acts as courier as needed.
• Processing new acquisitions and objects found in collection.
Successful candidates will have the following skills, knowledge and abilities:
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain exceptional working relationships across a board group of stakeholders.
• Flexibility and understanding of how organizational goals are supported by the Collections Department.
• Understanding of museum exhibition design and installation; art handling, loan oversight and courier experience.
• Familiarity with budgeting, oversight of contract employees and contracts.
• Technical proficiency with standard office equipment; fluent with Microsoft Office; experience with collections databases such as TMS, PastPerfect etc.
• Demonstrated experience developing registrarial processes and approaches that have resulted in organizational success for collections.
• Solid understanding of local, state and federal laws and regulations governing import and export of works of art.


Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree in Collections Management, Art History, Museum Studies, or related
• 5-9 years’ experience as a museum registrar
• At least 2 years of leadership experience
• Experience working in a historic house/estate environment and experience with temporary exhibitions in a historical home is highly preferred.
