Deputy Director for Art, Education, and Programs

GENERAL SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director, President and Chief Executive Officer, the Deputy Director for Art, Education and Programs provides leadership, strategic vision, and managerial oversight for the museum’s curatorial and learning and audience engagement divisions.  The Deputy Director ensures that the various departments are integrated and aligned with the overall strategy of the museum and provides guidance, support and direction to the heads of each respective division.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Oversees the artistic, programmatic and educational direction of the curatorial and learning and audience engagement divisions ensuring alignment with the museum strategic plan, vision and mission of creating experiences that help visitors find personal meaning in art and with each other.
• Ensures, in partnership with the Director and the Head of the Public Affairs department, that DIA’s arts service agreements with Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties are fully enforced. 
• Develops and implements both a comprehensive, long-range vision as well as short-term plans to achieve and exceed strategic goals in the curatorial and learning and audience engagement divisions, advancing the DIA’s commitment to excellence, innovation and leadership in the field.
• Provides overall guidance on the level of curatorial and art interpretation needed to actively engage audiences with art in our permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions.
• Ensures collaboration across the museum and successfully manages conflict resolution to achieve alignment of curatorial and audience engagement and educational programs with other museum departments.
• Provides leadership in art acquisitions, research activities associated with the permanent collection and publications in the museum’s Bulletin and exhibition catalogues as chief curator.
• Provides, in close collaboration with the Director, the VP of Exhibitions, Collections, and Information Strategies and the Director of Exhibitions, leadership for the overall museum exhibitions program and permanent gallery reinstallations.
• Participates in executive decision-making and collaborates with colleagues to facilitate a satisfying and inspiring workplace culture and a highly engaged, high performance team.
• Collaborates with the development team to identify significant fundraising and grant opportunities, assists in proposal preparation, participates in major gift solicitations, and maintains positive relationships with donors and grantors.
• Assists the Director in all efforts designed to build the museum's endowment and to engage its communities.
• Delivers reports to the DIA Board of Trustees and build relationships with board members.
• Recruits, mentors, develops and successfully leads a team to achieve the strategic objectives and the present and future needs of the divisions. Leads team members using a performance support process including goal setting, prioritization, feedback, and development.
• Plans, develops and manages division budgets.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in art history, arts management or related field required.  Ten years of progressively responsible experience in a museum, with five years of experience leading teams required.  Additional years of experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.

• Must have the ability to work well under pressure, handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines; must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Must possess sound business judgment, exercise professional conduct, understand and follow business ethics and standards, and maintain a high level of confidentiality in all duties.
• Be an engaged listener with the ability to build consensus both within the Museum and beyond.
• Be a compelling spokesperson adept at inspiring widely divergent audiences.
• Must have exemplary written, verbal, and listening communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
• Must demonstrate experience managing complex budgets and major grants.
• Must be able to successfully manage conflict.
• Must demonstrate excellent negotiation skills.
• Must have strong project management skills.
• Must be proficient in latest version of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Power Point, Outlook, Excel, SharePoint and Office 365.
• Must have the ability to work a non-traditional schedule including evenings, weekends, and overnight travel as needed.
