Senior Curator

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC), Sheboygan, WI, seeks a Senior Curator to lead Curatorial and Collections Management departments at the premier institution dedicated to presenting, collecting and preserving vernacular art in all its forms. The JMKAC has achieved national recognition for innovative programs featuring artist-built environments, self-taught, visionary genres within the context of contemporary art. The Senior Curator will foster collaboration among curatorial, education and programming sectors of the Arts Center delivering insightful, impactful exhibition programs and shaping the collecting priorities. S/he will champion fresh thinking and approaches to art exhibitions and collecting, and seize opportunities to be creative, experimental and innovative. This is an opportunity to advance JMKAC’s reputation as a thought and program leader at a national level. JMKAC has a $9.6 million budget and comprises 131,000 sq. ft. including a 77,000-sq.-ft. main building with 17,000 sq. ft. of galleries, a 51,000-sq.-ft. offsite storage facility, and theatre, performance and education spaces. The collection totals 22,000 objects. The Art Preserve, a new 58,000 sq. ft. collection and exhibition facility will open in 2020. Qualified candidates need not be experts in vernacular art but should be “culturalists,” well versed in contemporary art and demonstrate genuine interest in art that is outside the mainstream. The Senior Curator will be responsible for 3 direct reports within a department of 12 and an annual department budget of $556,000 (FY 2019). Position comes with competitive salary and benefits.
