New Mexico Museum of Art (NMMOA)

 

The New Mexico Museum of Art, a division of the State of New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA), is seeking an exceptional individual to fill the position of Executive Director.  This is a Governor Exempt position.

 

The New Mexico Museum of Art consists of the historic museum building that opened in on Santa Fe’s plaza in 1917. The museum looks forward to the opening of a new location, the Vladem Contemporary, a 15,000 square foot addition that bridges over an existing 20,000 square foot 1930’s brick and steel warehouse, designed by DNCA + StudioGP. Together these spaces will allow the museum to realize its potential as both the preeminent museum of Southwestern art and a beacon of contemporary art, goals outlined in the most recent strategic plan.

 

Position Summary:  The Executive Director is appointed by the Cabinet Secretary of DCA. The Executive Director should have a demonstrated ability in the administration of complex organizations serving multiple community-based constituencies and audiences. The Executive Director should have at least three years of experience in a senior museum management position; experience navigating public-private partnerships; a BA or higher degree in a discipline related to the position is required, e.g., art history, museum administration, etc. Candidate must have a successful record in strategic planning, grant-writing, management, and fundraising. The Executive Director supervises 25-30 staff including curators, educators, librarian, public relations and special events staff, technicians, facility managers, and security personnel. The annual budget of the NM Museum of Art is approximately $3 million with $2 million from the State of NM and the remainder from private donations raised by the Executive Director along with the Museum of NM Foundation.

 

The Executive Director will work within the DCA Arts and Sciences Group and will actively collaborate with other divisions within that unit, as well as support initiatives with the DCA History and Heritage Group and other DCA divisions. The position reports to the Chair of the Arts and Sciences Group.  The Executive Director will have an authentic commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in staffing, programming, and engagement.

 

The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums as a part of the Museum of New Mexico System. Compensation: $90,000 annual salary plus benefits and PERA retirement.
