Summary

The Education Manager will support existing programming and lead the design and implementation of new programming based on the collections and research at Dumbarton Oaks. The incumbent will maintain existing collaborations with DCPS, the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative, other DC cultural institutions, and non-profit partners. A unique feature of our educational programming is the involvement of a group of Harvard post-graduate fellows who come to Dumbarton Oaks for one or two years to contribute to our education and outreach activities. The Education Manager will play a key role in training, mentoring, and directing this talented group.

The Education Manager will also have oversight of the longstanding docent program and the more recent visitor services. Visitor services provide an important point of contact for members of the public when they arrive. Among other things, the docents offer both regular and specially scheduled guided tours.

Duties and Responsibilities
Manage existing partnerships and programming and lead the design and implementation of new programming. Identify opportunities for new partnerships that will help us reach more students and families in the DC metropolitan area.
Research, propose, and develop new school, teacher, and family programs. Liaise with local public schools and research curriculum standards to ensure future programming meets the needs of students and educators. Deliver educational programs for K-12 students.
Think creatively about the use of our collections to reinforce the role of arts and humanities in a rounded K-12 education. Design and deliver teacher professional development workshops.
Design and implement program evaluation to ensure programs and activities are aligned with regional and national standards. Develop and manage all education and public engagement program budgets.
Train and supervise early-career Harvard fellows and summer interns engaged in our educational and outreach initiatives.
Recruit and supervise docents and visitor services; oversee the docent program of guided tours. Supervise volunteers and occasionally contractors including recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, scheduling and enrichment.
Collaborate with scholarly departments, the garden, and the museum to identify new opportunities for public engagement (e.g. through the archival collections or music at Dumbarton Oaks). Work collaboratively with the Events, Communication, and Exhibition Managers to ensure long-term planning, coordination of our activities, and increased visibility of educational and enrichment opportunities at Dumbarton Oaks for students and the public. Contribute to ongoing thinking about how we can enhance the accessibility of our collections.
Design, research, and manage an Education/Outreach portion of the website dedicated to building and making freely available online a variety of teaching tools and resources for K-12 and undergraduate education based on our unique collections.
Manage Museum contacts using Salesforce.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic: Bachelor’s in Museum Education, Art History, or related field. Five years’ experience in an educational or museum environment.

Additional: Master’s in Museum Education, Art History, or related field preferred. Experience working directly with students/youth/educators. Experience with leading and mentoring a team. Fluent Spanish an advantage. Candidate must possess extraordinary problem-solving and leadership skills; demonstrate excellent judgement, organizational skills, and customer service; have excellent communication and presentation skills; and share our enthusiasm for making our humanistic mission and unique collections accessible and engaging to students and the public.
