The Education Manager will support existing programming and lead the design and implementation of new programming based on the collections and research at Dumbarton Oaks. The incumbent will maintain existing collaborations with DCPS, the DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative, other DC cultural institutions, and non-profit partners. A unique feature of our educational programming is the involvement of a group of Harvard post-graduate fellows who come to Dumbarton Oaks for one or two years to contribute to our education and outreach activities. The Education Manager will play a key role in training, mentoring, and directing this talented group.

The Education Manager will also have oversight of the longstanding docent program and the more recent visitor services. Visitor services provide an important point of contact for members of the public when they arrive. Among other things, the docents offer both regular and specially scheduled guided tours.

Additional information:

Dumbarton Oaks is a research institute, museum and historic garden affiliated with Harvard University and located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. The research institute and collections have been a center of excellence for the research and publication of Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, and Garden and Landscape Studies since Dumbarton Oaks’ inception in 1940. The museum is free and holds world-class collections of Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art. The historic garden is the best-preserved landscape of renowned designer Beatrix Farrand and was voted by National Geographic one of the 10 best in the world.

Since 2015, Dumbarton Oaks has entered a new phase of community engagement through the development of educational initiatives for K-12 students across DC. We offer immersive, collection-based programming with an emphasis on experiential learning and repeat visits. Educational activities have included an elementary-school program on the life cycle of plants based in the garden; a program on urban landscape design for high-school students; and K-12 educational programming based on our Byzantine and Pre-Columbian museum collections and special exhibitions. In addition to the excellence of the collections, our educational programming benefits from input by our committed professional staff of curators and researchers, our association with Harvard University, and the extraordinary teaching spaces that include the historic garden, a museum pavilion designed by Philip Johnson, and a historic greenhouse that will be renovated to house educational programs and an artist-in-residence.
