Associate Specialist, Old Masters Paintings

Associate Specialist, Old Masters Paintings (Christie's Inc.; New York, NY) Administer Old Master Paintings collections, successfully executing catalogue curation. Identify and maintain relationships with all client categories (collectors, dealers, corporations, and institutions), working with major clients in the sale of high value property. Lead exhibition set-up, planning and organizing the acquisition, storage, and exhibition of Old Master Paintings collections and related materials, with a focus on Italian and English paintings. Coordinate with the Estates, Appraisals & Valuations department to produce appraisals as a means of generating new long-term business opportunities. Write and prepare catalogue essays for Old Master Paintings. Work on catalogue production and layout for Old Master Paintings. Ensure all property entered for sale meets standards for provenance and condition reports. Provide Old Master Paintings subject-matter expertise on pricing, valuations, cataloguing, researching for staff at all levels across the business group. Ensure client information databases are up to date, including catalogue lists, and that client metrics are monitored. Review all incoming photo enquiries for Old Master Paintings to determine sale potential. Participate in departmental examination sessions, incorporating Old Master Paintings. Conduct appraisals and follow through on consignments in all stages of the sale. View and visit competitors’ auctions and track overall results. Actively participate in domestic events, art fairs, and other functions to represent Christie’s and build key relationships in the market.


Minimum Requirements:
Must have a Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Art History, Decorative Arts, or a closely related field plus 4 years of related experience administering Old Master Paintings collections within the Arts industry, OR a Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Art History, Decorative Arts, or a closely related field plus 2 years of related experience administering Old Master Paintings collections within the Arts industry.


Of the required experience, must have 2 years of experience in each of the following:

  • Reviewing, analyzing, and identifying Old Master Paintings.
  • Researching and executing catalogue curation.
  • Developing strategies and proposals to acquire Old Master Paintings property.
  • Participating in departmental examination sessions, incorporating Old Master Paintings.
  • Providing expert analysis on pricing, valuation, cataloguing, and research of Old Master Paintings, specifically in the field of Italian and English paintings
  • Leading exhibition set-up.
  • Developing and managing client relationships with collectors, dealers, corporations, and institutions.
  • Working with clients in the appraisal and transfer of Old Master Paintings.
  • Writing and preparing catalogue essays for Old Master Paintings.
  • Preparing catalogue production and layout for Old Master Paintings.
  • Ensuring all property acquired meets Old Master Art Industry standards and condition reports.
  • Working in the international primary and/or secondary Old Master Paintings market.
