Director of Development

Reports to: Museum Director
Status: Full time exempt

Overview
Executive leadership team member responsible for coordination of all development activities, creation and implementation of an overall development plan, and management, solicitation and stewardship of individual donors for gifts of $2,500 and above for all purposes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for coordination of all activities of the Development Department, including:
• Overseeing the creation and implementation of an overall development plan, including funding plans for programs, exhibitions, unrestricted giving, endowment and acquisitions
• Developing and implementing stewardship and donor recognition plan
• Managing development staff issues, including direct supervision of all development staff members
• Serving as Development liaison to governing organizations such as Museum Board, Finance Committee, Development Committee, Art Fund Inc., and the Endowment Board
• Serving as Development liaison for internal meetings, including executive leadership, department head, exhibition planning, strategic planning, and program planning meetings
• With the museum director, oversees the cultivation and stewardship of major donors, which will include engagement outside of the Museum’s regular hours of operation at museum events and social functions

Responsible for Individual Gifts of $2,500 and above, including:
• Major and principal gifts from individuals including endowment, capital and general operating
• Acquisition funds from individuals (gifts of art objects are managed by curators)
• Planned gifts
• Upper level memberships from individuals ($2,500 and above)
• Assisting curators in identifying and soliciting new members of the Museum’s six collection support groups, and cultivating current support group members for potential larger gifts
• Exhibition and program sponsorships from individuals
• Coordinate all corporate giving and grants with development staff

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree and at least eight years of fundraising experience required
• Demonstrated ability to manage confidential information responsibly
• Experience supervising a development staff of at least two people
• Ability to effectively and proactively manage a budget as well as read and understand financial reports
• Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with Board members, executives, employees and the public
• Ability to effectively present information to staff, Board committees, public groups, etc.
• Strong organizational skills and experience handling multiple competing priorities and timely, effective decision-making
• Ability to work well with volunteers and lead the work of volunteer committees
• Working knowledge of basic planned giving methods preferred
• Knowledgeable user of one or more of Blackbaud’s donor tracking software preferred
• Interest in the visual arts a plus
