Current Opportunities

Executive Director

Organization
Kimball Art Center (KAC) is dedicated to providing arts access, education, engagement, and experience to everyone. Through its exhibitions, educational arts programs, and events, KAC provides a platform and a place for artists and arts enthusiasts to come together to explore, celebrate, develop, and cherish the creative spark that lives within us all.

KAC has been a pillar of the art community in Park City, Utah, since 1976 when Bill Kimball started the center in an old garage. As Park City evolved through the years, KAC has mirrored its change, transforming into a world-class community visual art center and a cultural hub for the community. Consistent with its mission to provide arts access, admission to all KAC exhibitions has remained free since its founding.

KAC exhibitions, educational programs, and events serve more than 85,000 community members annually. KAC produces 10 to 12 exhibitions each year in its two galleries, providing access to nationally-renowned artists as well as regional and local artists and works. With each exhibit, dynamic programming expands access to the art, inspires thoughtful discussion, and further builds community. This programming includes Morning at the Museum for tots (ages three through five), Read and Re(View) book discussions, panel discussions on exhibit-related topics, and other opportunities to appreciate or create art that is themed around the exhibition.

KAC offers nearly 300 on-site classes annually to youth and adults, including clay, welding, encaustic, painting, drawing, photography, glass fusion, and more. The KAC’s Elementary Visual Arts (EVA) partners with K-12 schools in Utah and bridges a critical gap to provide immersive and quality art classes to youth who would otherwise not receive arts education. EVA provides art lessons for more than 1,500 students monthly with KAC-trained and supported teachers using a high-quality visual arts curriculum developed by KAC Educational staff. Students and teachers are also welcome to participate in the KAC’s A.R.T.S. School Field Trip Program with an exhibition tour and project at the KAC. Additional off-site programming serves the community in after-school programs and programming with other nonprofits and community partnerships, including the Park City Latino community and the National Ability Center.

KAC’s largest event of the year is the annual Park City Kimball Arts Festival, held during the first weekend in August. The festival attracts more than 225 jury-selected artists from around the country to Park City for approximately 50,000 attendees to enjoy. Taking place on historic Main Street, the festival brings more than $20 million in annual economic impact to the state of Utah. The event also serves as a primary source of revenue for KAC.

Due to programming and parking limitations, KAC moved from its original home in Park City’s “Old Town” to its current location in 2016, which consists of two exhibition spaces, classrooms, offices, a café, and a separate clay studio. The current premises are on the site of a future 5.5-acre Arts and Culture District, which KAC is developing in partnership with the Sundance Institute and the City. The district is expected to be completed in the fall of 2023. KAC plans to build an exciting new 25,000-square-foot facility that will facilitate a large expansion of programming, potentially including wood-working, glass-blowing, textiles/weaving, and a digital classroom for photography, design, screen, and 3D printing. The $20 million capital campaign to fund this project is underway, with a terrific base of support.

KAC is governed by a 13-member board of directors and has an administrative team of 16 full-time and part-time staff members. In the fiscal year ending December 31, 2018, total reported revenues were $2 million, generating an operational surplus—an accomplishment that has been replicated in 10 out of the last 11 years. KAC has approximately $500,000 in cash on its balance sheet and a $2 million endowment.

Community
Located 35 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, Park City was named by Forbes among one of the 20 prettiest towns in the United States. It is easily accessible from Salt Lake International Airport and home to a wide range of accommodations that attract vacationers during both the winter and summer seasons. Sandwiched between two premier resorts, Deer Valley and Park City Mountain, this former mining town sits in the shadow of the rugged Wasatch Mountain Range. Both resorts hosted events during the 2002 Winter Olympics. The Utah Olympic Park, which sits just north of Park City proper, is still a major training facility for winter athletes, including the United States Ski and Snowboard Teams. Park City was awarded a gold-level Ride Center designation from the International Mountain Bicycling Association for its mountain bike trails, amenities, and community. Outdoor enthusiasts can partake in an array of summer activities, including biking, fly-fishing, white-water rafting, and even stand-up paddleboard yoga in a 10,000-year-old crater.

In addition to the beautiful mountain scenery and active lifestyle that abounds in Park City, the sense of community is ever present. The city is conducting a community visioning project, Park City Vision 2020. Through community engagement and dialogue, the city will define the Park City Community Vision and Action Plan. The Park City Community Foundation holds an annual day of giving, Live PC, Give PC, which collectively supports more than 100 local nonprofits, including KAC. In 2019 this collective day of giving raised more than $2.5 million from over 5,100 donors making more than 12,700 donations.

Park City attracts approximately 3 million annual visitors and currently brings in a yearly average of $530 million to the Utah economy as a tourist hot spot. The city also hosts the annual Sundance Film Festival, the largest independent film festival in the United States. It has many retailers, clubs, bars, and restaurants as well as nearby reservoirs, hot springs, forests, and hiking and biking trails.
