Librarian

The Library Company of Philadelphia (the Library) seeks a Librarian who is a respected Americanist scholar and a skilled administrator committed to facilitating research. The Librarian will partner with the Executive Director and a dedicated team shaping the Library’s future, magnifying its impact in academia and engaging the public. The Librarian collaborates with professional peers at educational and cultural institutions in a city steeped in history. Founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin and friends, the Library focuses on American society from the 17th through the 19th centuries and is dedicated to fostering a learning community. The Library stewards one of the finest Early American collections, with endowed concentrations in African American and women’s history. It offers research assistance, exhibitions, educational programs, and teacher training. REQUIRED: BA in American Studies, History, or Literature. Advanced degree preferred. MLIS advantageous. Deep knowledge of and connections in the worlds of rare books and printed materials. Five years’ experience managing museum or library staff, budgets, and operations. The Librarian will be an outward-facing, effective public speaker eager to continue developing the Library’s collection, update its documentation and accessibility, and oversee efficient, cost-effective operations.
