ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMING & EDUCATION

The Position

We are looking for a dynamic individual to help develop and implement our vision of educational programming by creating innovative programming for the field of contemporary art museums. On day one, you will be responsible for creating compelling in-person and multimedia programming for youth, emerging adult, and adult audiences, with a focus on young-adult and college age programming. Your teammates will include the Director of Programming & Education, Manager of Youth Programming and other supportive roles in adult and youth programming. We are headquartered and this position is based in the downtown Denver area. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Museum is under capacity restrictions so this role will initially be majority remote.

About You

● You have five years of progressive experience in an educational or cultural organization, including one year leading a team of one or more educational or cultural professionals.
● You collaborate to develop compelling in-person and multimedia programming for youth, emerging adult, and adult audiences and with a multitude of external organizations both remotely and in-person.
● You are a key contributor in a nonprofit organization with demonstrated success in leading innovative educational programming. Ideally, you have been at an organization with 50 staff members, so you can help anticipate our specific needs as we continue to grow.
● You have excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, you can communicate with a variety of audiences, you appreciate the details, and you are organized.

A Day in the Life

1. Programming & Education

● Develop, manage, implement, and evaluate a wide range of innovative education and programmatic opportunities for college-aged audiences.
● Assist the Director of Programming and Education to develop the strategic vision for diverse programming and education offerings for youth, emerging adult, and adult audiences that foster meaningful connections to contemporary art.
● Assist the Director of Programming and Education in building, developing, and mentoring a team of museum professionals.
● Monitor advanced pedagogical approaches to museum education and act as a dynamic subject knowledge contributor.

2. Collaboration

● Develop strategic partnerships with area high schools, colleges, universities, educators, artists, museum colleagues, and community organizations to create programming for young adult audiences.
● Collaborate cross-departmentally to develop in-person and multimedia tour and outreach programming for college-age and young adult audiences.
● Lead departmental staff members, including recruitment, training, mentorship and professional development.
3. Finance

● Work with the Director of Programming & Education to establish and adhere to departmental operating budgets.
What You Bring to Us
1. A Master’s degree in Art or Museum Studies is preferred. We don’t mind if you have knowledge in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, or both.
2. A minimum of five years of progressive experience in an educational or cultural organizational setting, and at least one year leading and mentoring one or more educational or cultural professionals.  It will also help you to have experience working in schools or with school audiences. 
3. If you’ve made it to this point, you can guess that you need great computer skills including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.  You also need to produce and meet deadlines in our fast-paced and changing environment.
4. The desire to work with a dynamic, diverse and collaborative team, usually days, but nights and weekends if needed for events.

Our History

MCA Denver was founded in 1996 by philanthropist Sue Cannon and a group of committed volunteers and artists who responded to the community’s need for a contemporary art museum in Denver. In 2007, we opened our new, 27,000-square foot, environmentally sustainable facility in the Riverfront neighborhood of lodo Denver. Application Process

● This is an exempt, salaried position. The salary range is $60,000 to $65,000 and includes our standard benefits package, including a medical plan, dental plan, basic term life insurance, long term disability, 403b retirement, holiday pay and generous paid time off.  Relocation assistance may be considered.

The Legal Stuff

● You need to be able to sit or stand for 6 hours per day. While not frequent, you need to reach for, move and/or 50 pounds and use your hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, mobility to access a wide variety of meeting and museum settings, and to perform a variety of tasks that involve standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, and twisting, occasionally climbing stairs or using an elevator, possibly reaching chest high and overhead for materials, with reasonable accommodation (we put it all in 1 sentence to make our legal team happy!).
