Department Information

Since its establishment in 1941, the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University (IU) has grown from a small university teaching collection into one of the foremost university art museums in the country. A preeminent teaching museum, the museum’s internationally acclaimed collection includes more than 45,000 objects representing nearly every art-producing culture throughout history. The museum recently completed a $30 million renovation of its acclaimed I. M. Pei–designed building, which now features seven new galleries, four new centers (Education, Conservation, Curatorial Studies, and Prints, Drawings, and Photographs), and three art study rooms. With a revived physical space comes a renewed focus on our outreach, teaching, technology, and exhibition efforts.


Job Summary

The Director of Curatorial Affairs provides strategic vision and managerial oversight for the museum’s exhibitions and collections, including a team of curatorial, conservation, registrar, and installation staff. This position works across disciplines to develop and implement gallery and exhibition experiences that engage diverse communities, and help the museum achieve its mission and education goals. They also administer the Eskenazi Museum’s collecting activities, working closely with the Executive Director to establish priorities and plans for collection care, research, documentation, and access. The Director of Curatorial Affairs also serves as a member of the museum’s senior leadership team, collaborating on strategic planning, the execution of administrative and budgetary matters, the establishment of policies and procedures, and long-range exhibitions and programming schedules. The Director of Curatorial Affairs will be a proven administrator with experience mentoring staff and a well-developed understanding of curatorial, installation, and collections care best practices. Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in museum services or a related field and four years of experience in museum services or a related field and one year of management experience in museum services or a related field.

Master of Arts degree. Five years of experience in museum services or a related field. Two years of management experience in museum services or a related field. Four years of leadership experience.


Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the abillity to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
