Museum Director

The Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts at Pepperdine University invites applications for a full-time Museum Director. Pepperdine University is a private Christian university in Malibu, California where “students are strengthened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership.” The Center for the Arts includes the 450-seat Smothers Theatre, the 118-seat Raitt Recital Hall, the 100-seat Lindhurst Theatre, and the Frederick R. The Museum Director defines and administers the mission and creative vision of the Weisman Museum by planning and organizing a series of changing art exhibitions for the educational enlightenment and aesthetic enjoyment of the university and greater community. 

Responsibilities include:
- Exhibitions. Researches and curates original art exhibitions. Reviews and selects appropriate traveling exhibitions. Secures loans of art from private and public collections. Writes exhibition catalogs and interpretive material.
- Public Relations. Promotes exhibitions. Writes press releases and marketing materials. Serves as museum spokesperson for television, radio, and print interviews. Oversees website and social media presence.
- Education. Develops and leads exhibition tours. Trains university students to lead K-12 school tours. Identifies curricular connections with Seaver College and Fine Arts faculty. Plans and gives tours and public lectures.
- Installation. Oversees all art handling, framing, and installation. Supervises all packing and shipping of art. Supervises contractors, as well as temporary and student staff in installation/deinstallation. Coordinates senior exhibition with Fine Arts Division. 
- Collection Management. Reviews all acquisitions of art. Implements professional standards of collections care. Maintains object records as digital and paper files. Oversees safe storage of collection. Maintains archives.
- Administration. Formulates policies to meet professional standards of collection care and academic interpretation. Works with General Counsel to approve loan and contractor contracts. Financial management of Weisman Museum’s $140,000 annual budget.
- Facilities. Oversees condition of museum’s physical environment, striving to maintain professional standards of environmental control for art collections. Creates lighting designs to meet differing conservation demands.
- Development. Actively cultivates relationships with existing and potential donors, collectors, foundations, and artists. Searches for foundation, corporate, and private funding for ambitious exhibitions. Provides tours to university and Center for the Arts donors.

Qualifications/Skills:

M.A. or M.F.A. in Art History, Museum Studies, Curatorial Studies, Art, or the equivalent required. Ph.D. in Art History preferred.
3-5 years curatorial, educational, and/or administrative experience in a professional art museum required.
Enthusiasm and interest in working with university students, particularly Seaver College undergraduate students serving as museum attendants in the Weisman Museum of Art.
