Director, School Programs and Partnerships

Reporting to the Deputy Director, Education & Engagement, the Director, School Programs and Partnerships oversees inclusive, accessible, and equitable programs for school audiences, including tours and studio workshops, multi-visit programs, professional development opportunities for educators, and teen programs. They support the institutional mission and vision and position the museum as an active leader in visual arts education at the local, state, and national level.

This position is part of the Learning and Engagement leadership team that guides a unified, cross-departmental strategy of programs, resources, and experiences that spark curiosity and creativity, connect people and communities, and illuminate the myriad ways that art expresses human experiences.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Strategy and Leadership: Creates and implements a comprehensive plan for school programs and partnerships including student, educator, and teen programs in alignment with the museum’s mission and strategic plan and reflective of best practices in teaching and learning. Facilitates departmental long-range planning, establishing goals and objectives, aligning resources, and measuring impact. Collaborates with key stakeholders in developing and supporting institutional initiatives.
  2. Professional Expertise and Leadership: Maintains awareness of regional school districts and curriculum standards, teaching and learning research and scholarship, national trends in education, best practices in museum education, and collections and exhibitions. Applies knowledge to program development and staff development. Participates actively in the field through conferences, external committees, writing and teaching. Disseminates reports, research, and information on Nelson-Atkins projects.
  3. Education Partnerships and External Relationships: Builds, maintains, and evaluates relationships and collaborations with local, regional, and national educational organizations and groups. Serves as a key partner with local schools, school districts, and universities. Maintains knowledge of educational structures, systems, and priorities in Kansas City.
  4. Staff Supervision and Development: Supervises the activity and development of staff, volunteers, and interns. Reviews, edits, and provides feedback on work product. Conducts annual performance feedback and ongoing coaching and mentorship. Provides opportunities for team and individual growth and learning.
  5. Budget Management and Fundraising: Develops and manages fiscal plans for school programs and partnerships. Implements responsible program cost controls. Reviews and approves contracts and expenses. Work collaboratively with development on fund raising opportunities.
  6. Evaluation and Program Assessment: Identify benchmarks, outcomes, performance indicators, and metrics to ensure quality and effectiveness of school programs and partnerships and implement modifications. Work closely with Evaluation and Research staff to design, administer, analyze, and report on programs efficacy. Tracks and analyzes attendance using the museum’s CRM.
  7. Other: All other duties as assigned and in general support of the department, division and/or museum in general.

CORE CAPABILITY REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience

  • Masters in Art History, Visual Art, Museum Studies, Education, or other related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5 years experience in art museum education with demonstrated success in school and teacher programs development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Strong understanding of PreK-12 learning and teaching strategies, curriculum and standards, and museum education theory and practice.
  • Experience with evaluation and research methods in art education.
  • Experience using new technologies to deliver educational content.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, leading, and collaborating with internal and external teams.
  • 2 - 5 years experience hiring, training, mentoring, and coaching staff.
  • Experience applying DEAI practices into art education.

Office Environment. Low to moderate noise level. The ability to sit for extended periods.  The ability to regularly traverse from one location to another (office and other museum buildings).
