Job Title: Chief Advancement Officer
Reports to: Executive Director/CEO
Positions Supervised: Associate Director of Development, Director of Individual Giving, Fundraising Events Manager, Database Administrator, Membership Manager, and Corporate Fundraising Consultant.
Works Closely With: Executive Director, Deputy Director, Chief Curator, Director of Marketing, Communications and Design, Director of Finance, Directors of other departments, Board of Trustees and its Executive, Finance, Advancement, and Governance Committees.
The Chief Advancement Officer will lead the advancement team and all aspects of fundraising for unrestricted annual support as well as programmatic, exhibition, capital, and endowment funds. The position also oversees events and member engagement activities. The primary focus of this role is to create, oversee, and execute a plan to build and sustain contributed support.
The CAO must be an accomplished front-line major gift solicitor. They will be expected to build upon current advancement success to create a robust and sustainable culture of philanthropy.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with the Executive Director as an executive team member to establish fundraising strategies and goals, oversee execution of strategies, monitor overall progress toward goals, and address any unanticipated shortfalls.
- Manage fundraising team to implement advancement strategies, developing support through major gifts, annual fund, membership, government and foundation grants, corporate sponsorships and grants, endowment, legacy gifts, and some miscellaneous sources. Recruit, train, nurture and evaluate team to align with strategy.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with trustees, major donors, and major-donor prospects. Support the Executive Director, curators, and key trustees in managing relationships with prospects and donors.
- Maintain and expand healthy donor pool, identifying new donor prospects. Oversee the maintenance of clean, up-to-date, donor and prospect records.
- Oversee and support the fundraising events team as well as other development staff, and event volunteer leaders for the museum’s signature fundraising events.
- Oversee the Membership Department including: identifying of annual goals and objectives; performance management; department budget; and coordination between fundraising initiatives, audience development, and marketing initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate for the Chief Advancement Officer will be an inclusive leader and manager of the highest integrity, with the ability to motivate, inspire, and unite staff and stakeholders around a shared vision. The individual will possess:
- Ability to serve as a trusted partner to the Executive Director and Trustees.
- A successful record of accomplishments in envisioning, implementing and managing a bold advancement strategy within a competitive philanthropic environment;
- Demonstrated success as a front-line leadership gift solicitor.
- Leadership experience in planning and implementing comprehensive campaigns.
- Experience with/understanding of the unique opportunities and challenges of working in a seasonal community and how best to leverage opportunities “in-season” and create other opportunities to engage donors year-round.
- Substantial experience managing and evaluating staff and working effectively with high-level volunteers to meet ambitious institutional goals;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be an excellent communicator and listener with strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to cultivate relationships with and build bridges across diverse internal and external constituencies;
- Fluency with budgeting and financial reporting;
- Belief in the role of art museums, history and culture;
- Minimum ten years of management experience in an art museum, arts-related organization, philanthropic organization, or institution of higher learning, including at least seven years in fundraising and development leadership positions;
- Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree(s) preferred.
