Director of Interpretation

The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco (FAMSF) is looking for a Director of Interpretation to improve the visitor experience by igniting connections between 21st-century audiences and works of art, spanning 4000 years of creativity using a lens of equity and inclusion.  The Director of Interpretation is a newly created and critical museum leadership team position.  The Director works in partnership with staff and colleagues across the institution and in the field to develop strategies and plans that advance FAMSF’s mission to integrate and embed equality in everything by mapping more inclusive interpretive frameworks, co-creating and editing content, designing new processes to augment visitor and community engagement opportunities through the delivery of content, and evaluating metrics of interpretation success. 

The successful Director of Interpretation candidate will be an influential and facilitative leader who values are centered in equity and inclusion as a theory of change.  The Director must have a passion for interpretation, a demonstrated keen interest in museums, the museum experience and a real desire to work with a talented team to interpret and express the collections in ways that appeal and inform a broad and diverse audience.  

The salary range for the position is $120,000 to $140,000.  FAMSF offers a competitive full employment benefits package.
