Museum Director
Position Summary
The Director is responsible for leading the Cedarburg Art Museum in a manner and direction that supports the organization’s mission, as defined by the Board of Directors, to “establish and maintain a forum that will collect, exhibit, and forever preserve, the artwork of Cedarburg and its environs.” In addition to guiding the overall direction of the Cedarburg Art Museum, the Director oversees the finances, operations, programs, and strategic plan of the Museum. Other major duties include staff management, development and fundraising, oversight of curatorial duties and administrative duties. The Director serves as the key decision-making and leadership role for the Museum, both internally and publicly, and is responsible for maintaining positive organizational culture and community relations. This position reports directly to the Board of Directors, and serves as a liaison between the board and staff, and key volunteers.
Major Duties and Tasks
1. Finances (10%)
a. Manage day-to-day finances such as reconciliation and cash flow;
b. Coordinate with Treasurer to develop annual budget for Board approval.
2. Museum Operations (10%)
a. Act as liaison between CAM staff, interns, volunteers and Board of Directors;
b. Secure necessary permits and maintain appropriate licenses.
3. Administration (10%)
a. Maintain facilities with the support of the facilities committee– alarm systems, sprinkler system, HVAC, lighting, grounds, etc.
4. Staff and Volunteer Communications (20%)
a. Provide leadership and communicate regularly with staff and key volunteers to assure museum is on track to meeting its goals in the best possible way.
b. Work closely to organize and grow a dynamic volunteer base through regular interactions and recognition.
c. Attend meetings of key committees to provide guidance regarding museum’s broader goals
d. Establish regular communication with volunteers, membership, and community members for upcoming events, workshops, and needed volunteer roles.
e. Provide supervision and guidance for Interns
5. Fund Development, and Community Relations (30%)
a. Cultivate relationships within the Community for the purposes of fundraising
b. Approach prospective sponsors for exhibitions and programs
c. Fund development in support of programs and events (in-kind, grants and corporate)
d. Lead grant projects and track event attendance for grant purposes
e. Attend Community meetings and events as needed to represent the museum, to develop key relationships and support arts advocacy in the greater community.
f. Develop existing programs to support museum’s mission, raise awareness of the arts, and produce revenue for the museum in support of exhibitions and other activities
6. Exhibition and Collection Management (20%)
a. Work with Exhibition Committee and curator on exhibition planning and implementation
b. Ensure proper documentation for incoming and outgoing artwork with support from Curator and Exhibitions Coordinator
c. Implement collection database to full capacity
d. Review art storage solutions to ensure safe handling and accurate inventory
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA) Qualifications
● Knowledge of nonprofit or museum administrative procedures and facility management
● Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
● Highly organized with the ability to work independently
● Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks successfully
● Strong public speaking and presentation skills
● Ability to acquire and utilize knowledge of subject areas necessary to perform duties
● Experience creating budgets and other financial reports
● Ability to clearly articulate financial matters to the Board and staff
● Fund development experience, including securing in-kind and corporate donations and event sponsorships; grant writing and reporting experience
● Knowledge of collections management database PastPerfect
Requirements
Background in Art, Museum Studies, Nonprofit Management or other relevant experience. Experience in event planning and execution, and nonprofit management. M.A. preferred.
